Research and Field Concentration

Our department provides four (4) main field concentrations: botany, zoology, microbiology and biotechnology, ecology.

  • Botany, nowadays is developing and establishing researches in : marine and terrestrial plant explorations as potential renewable resources for biofuels, biopesticides, biofertilizer and biopharmaceutics; plant eco-physiology and structure; plant secondary metabolites; inventory and systematic mapping of vegetation in the coastal areas of East Java; plant cultivation in vitro. We found that extract mangroves are potential sources for bio-insecticides and bio-fungicides; Spirogyra is proven as a potential source for bioethanol, mycorhiza as a potential agent maintaining leguminoceae, maize plant and rice plant under water/salt stress in marginal lands around East Java.  We also successfully establish a culture tissue project for producing explants Orchids and bananas in vitro.

  • Zoology research, due to as about 98% animal phylum are occupied in marine habitat, is committed to explore, conserve, and exploits coastal and marine natural resources with respect to their sustainability and economic value. Mapping a coastal and marine animal diversity is the  first  important study to have updating database. A various laboratory works are also performed to investigate their potencies through a biosystematics, bioinformatics, anatomy and physiology, or biotechnology study. Then studies for exploring their commercial potencies are advanced interest for producing human welfares. For instance, we investigate species diversity in a brackish pond using euryhyaline marine fish for founding new food resource. We found that sponge is a potential as anticancer agent, or fish is potential chondroytin sulphate and nano calcium for medical good resource.

  • Microbiology and biotechnology researches explore the diversity of bacteria and fungi in a marine and terrestrial habitat in order to find their function in waste organic compounds and hydrocarbons degradation, biogas production and toxic metal pollutants bioremediation. We perform both aerobic and anaerobically microbial culturing, as we successfully established a simply anaerobic method for maintaining an anoxic condition. Our lab has microbial isolate collection consist of bacteria and fungus that had been biochemically characterized and identified their ability in their environment; ex. degrading waste organic compounds and reducing a toxic mercury ion (Hg2+) to a less toxic ion (Hg0) . Molecular characterization is also successfully performed using genome restriction analysis and 16S DNA gene, especially for mercury reducing bacteria. Microbial enzyme is also our interest to harvest crude enzyme for simple application.

  • Ecology studies focus on maintaining a balance ecosystem in marine and coastal environments, as we have flora and fauna databases in a particular habitat (mangroves, birds, planktons and benthos, coral reefs); managing marine polluted environments, planting artificial coral reef to recovery a broken marine habitat in Situbondo (East Java) and other marine side areas, following a climate exchange through arthropod indicators, developing a substitution tobacco dust instead TBT for anti-biofouling agent.
