More than half a century Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has dedicated itself to national education. Innumerable intellectuals of the nation are born from ITS and contribute to the nation. One of them is Prof. Ir Widi Agoes Pratikto MSc PhD who has been active in the international maritime world.
One of his great contribution to international maritime world is when he served as Executive Director of Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF). The Coral Triangle is a marine area located in the western Pacific Ocean icluding waters of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Solomon Islands. Its named after its staggering number of corals (nearly 600 different species of reef-building corals alone), the region nurtures six of the world’s seven marine turtle species and more than 2000 species of reef fish.His journey in international maritime world start in ITS as a student in Faculty of Marine Technology. In 1979, because of his academic achievement, he was awarded as ITS Model Student. After graduation, Widi decided that he want to pursue career as lecturer in ITS.
His choice to become a lecturer demands Widi to further adding his knowledge. Consequently, the Master and Doctorate degrees also successfully achieved in 1983 and 1992 in the United States. And winning twice predicate lecturer model in this FTK give him a degree Professor in Coastal Engginering in 1999.
Then, in 2002 his journey as a government bureaucrat started. “At that time Mr. Rohmin Dahuri (Former Minister of Marine, red) asked me to join the Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (DKP) as the Director General of Coastal and Small Islands (P3K),” he said.Armed with the sincere intention to contribute to the country, he too accept the offer. His first day in government is a challenge. This is because of the condition of the coast and thousands of small islands in Indonesia are still a concern. “Infrastructure and transportation were extremely limited, especially when compared with the land area. In terms of community economy the coast is also left behind, “explained Widi who is also the author of the book Sell these Coasts and Small Islands.
Widi understand that only hard work is can improve that situation. And the first thing he did was instilling motivation and dedication to all employees. “We often spend time to discuss and organize development in coastal areas and small islands, “said the father of three children.However, now the hard work is beginning to show results. “The coastal economy and small islands are now beginning to raise. “It was the result of several packaged programs, such as the economic empowerment programs of coastal communities that provide strengthening of venture capital.
Even greater, that is to become Secretariate General of the Department Marine and Fisheries, he officially took office as of 5 September 2006. This makes it a Decision Support Systemhas a wider scope of authority.
He is now also beginning to address the issue of structuring development planning marine and fisheries, development budgeting, development inter-institutional and international cooperation, information and issues public relations, the implementation of fish quarantine action, arrangement staffing, organizational and legal arrangements to the problems such as the provision of DKP office buildings and administrative affairs others.

To be a trustee as a lecturer at ITS, Widi who also served as secretary of Marine Engineering Studies Program. For him, the world of education has become a big part of his life. He still allocates his time to teach at ITS.
“My academic activities make a boost in the execution duty as Secretary General of DKP, so Insha Allah mandate as Secretary-General DKP and faculty at ITS can I live with everythingsincerity and sincerity, “said Widi.
Widi: Marine Research Needs to be ImprovedThe Indonesian sea Widi is indeed a priceless treasure belongs to this nation. “About three-quarters of the country are oceans so it should be the sea should be the direction of development paradigm national, “he said enthusiastically. He believes the sea can be managed on a regular basis seriously then Indonesia can move from all the problems.Expectations are not excessive. About 2000 species of fish are on Indonesia. For it, Widi invites all academics to start to enhance research in the marine field.
Research in this field is like planning a fishing boat. “The boat it takes the fisherman today is a bigger boat, however, still in accordance with the culture and sociological coastal communities, so these boats can be produced and maximized effectively by fishermen, “said the Indonesian representative in the commission of Asia – Pacific Fishery Commission (APFC).
In addition, some important research can be maximized for Indonesia’s maritime progress is about safety sea transportation, hazard mitigation and marine environment management and seabed infrastructures such as pipelines and submarine cables also need to be repaired well.
Through some marine research, Widi hopes ITS can realize a great dream that welfare society through science and marine technology. “For that, the synergy between departments and faculty at ITS needs to be done. Given this integration is not impossible ITS research centers are able to address future challenges in developing Indonesia’s sea is balanced with the principle of sustainable development,” he said.
In this interview, Widi also advised many ITS students to continue to sharpen themselves especially in communicating and loving nature. Try occasionally along the coast and diving and traveling to small islands to help society. Then the experience will reflect that this country is really beautiful and rich, however, it needs to be partisanship and dedication especially for all young people ITS,” explained Widi, trying to convince that Indonesia is actually rich but it needs dedication of all parties.
