The Faculty of Intelligent Electrical and Informatics Technology (ELECTICS) at the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has once again pioneered an innovation to support the growth of Indonesia’s Sharia economy through the launch of the digital platform Halal Waypoints and Verified Eaterie (HalalWave). Developed by the Department of Information Systems (DSI) at ITS, this platform aims to help the public easily locate nearby halal dining options.

The HalalWave platform was initiated by two DSI ITS lecturers, Prof. Nur Aini Rakhmawati MScEng PhD and Amalia Utamima SKom MBA PhD, involving Master’s student in Information Systems, Muhammad Ridho Waradana. Starting as a thesis project, Ridho, along with his colleague Ramadhana Rizqy Arifin, developed this platform to offer a more interactive solution for locating halal cuisine compared to the current system managed by the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH).

“At the onset, HalalWave was designed to aid the general public, particularly Muslim residents, in finding halal food in Surabaya. We employed the Fuzzy Multi-Attribute Decision Making method to ensure personalized recommendations that align with user preferences,” explained Prof. Nur Aini, head of ITS Halal Studies.

The platform goes beyond listing verified halal MSMEs by also providing recommendations based on user location and showing the quickest routes to dining locations via the Genetic Algorithm. This technology allows HalalWave to deliver quicker and more accurate solutions for those seeking halal food, especially within the Surabaya area.

In its implementation, Bank Indonesia supported HalalWave’s development by adding data from the halal MSMEs under its guidance, strategically expanding the scope of verified halal MSMEs listed on the platform.

Ridho noted the challenges in developing the platform, particularly in verifying reliable halal data. “It took us time to ensure that data from BPJPH and the internet was accurate and that each MSME had clear location data. This is crucial for helping users find the best routes to their desired dining destinations,” Ridho shared.

Looking ahead, Ridho hopes HalalWave will continue to grow and expand, eventually covering all halal MSMEs across Indonesia. The development team also plans to automate the search and recommendation features to ensure platform stability as the MSME data volume increases.

Prof. Nur Aini expressed her aspirations for the platform: “HalalWave is expected to help halal MSMEs gain wider recognition and support the growth of Indonesia’s Sharia economy. We hope Indonesia can lead the halal industry within the country,” she stated.

HalalWave is now accessible to the public through https://halalwave.vercel.app, though it remains in its developmental stage. Ridho also encourages users, particularly from the ELECTICS community, to provide feedback to further refine the platform.
