Taking a big step to pursue education abroad is not an easy decision. However, Denta, an Informatics IUP ITS student, successfully overcame this challenge through the Double Degree program at Fontys University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands. With a combination of research-based education at ITS and project-based learning at Fontys, he gained outstanding academic and professional experience.
Denta’s interest in the Double Degree program stemmed from his desire to experience studying abroad and face new challenges. Among ITS’s partner universities, he chose Fontys University for its balanced curriculum between theory and practice, as well as its industry-based learning approach. Moreover, job prospects in Europe after graduation were also a major consideration. With a degree from a Dutch university, Denta has greater opportunities to work in various Schengen countries without needing an additional work visa in the first few years after graduation.
Studying at two universities with different learning systems was a challenge for Denta. ITS emphasizes theory and academic research, while Fontys focuses on project-based learning and industry engagement. This difference required him to adapt to a more independent and practical learning style. Additionally, language and cultural barriers were other challenges. The Dutch’s blunt and to-the-point communication style is quite different from Indonesia’s, which prioritizes politeness and empathy. However, this experience helped Denta develop cross-cultural communication skills and broaden his perspective.
Studying at Fontys provided unforgettable experiences for Denta. The project-based learning system trained him to solve real-world case studies and work in international teams. Additionally, the opportunity to teach second-semester students about Git alongside his ITS peers was a valuable experience that enriched his skills. One of the key moments in his studies was his graduation internship at ROOSH (Vliegenenparkeren), where he gained firsthand experience in the tech industry. He prepared for his defense meticulously, including conducting mock presentations at his internship company. As a result, Denta successfully completed his defense with an A grade, a proud achievement.
After completing the Double Degree program, Denta will continue his career as a junior full-stack developer at the company where he interned. Furthermore, he plans to keep enhancing his skills through additional training and certifications. In the long run, he aspires to make a greater impact in the technology industry, whether through strategic roles or by building his own tech business in Indonesia.
Denta also aims to apply the knowledge and experience he gained in the Netherlands to Indonesia’s tech industry. One of the aspects he highlights is the importance of user experience (UX) in product development, as well as the high discipline and efficiency culture in the Netherlands. According to him, user-centered innovation can help create more effective and beneficial technology in Indonesia.
For ITS students interested in joining the Double Degree program, Denta advises not to be afraid of challenges.
“It is through these challenges that we can grow further,” he said.
With hard work and a willingness to learn, this program can be an extraordinary stepping stone for the future. Denta’s journey shows that with strong determination and readiness to face challenges, studying abroad is not just a dream but also an opportunity for academic, professional, and personal growth.
