ENCLOSURE DESIGN FOR FUSED DEPOSITION MODELLING 3D PRINTER WITH SIZE ADJUSTABLE FEATURE

Abstract

Industry has evolved from Industry 1.0 to the Industrial Era 4.0 which is marked by major transformations in production, communication and distribution systems. Significant changes can also be seen in the service and creative industries, with 16 subsectors within them that have the potential to develop rapidly. Industry 4.0 is based on nine main technologies that support it, one of which is Additive Manufacturing, where the creation of physical components is carried out through a layer-by-layer process. One example of a technique for applying Additive Manufacturing technology is Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). FDM is popular because of its low maintenance costs and wide material availability.
Sultan 3D Printing as a 3D printing service provider and the ITS IDIG Laboratory as an academic laboratory have implemented this technology, but in its realization they experienced several challenges such as warpping that occurs in ABS filament and limited 3D printer facilities that are not yet adequate. Nevertheless, both continue to innovate and collaborate to face these changes.
This design uses a mixed design method by conducting observation, shadowing, interviews, questionnaires and literature studies to collect important data used in the analysis and study process. This design focuses on developing enclosure products that are able to overcome the problems of limited 3D printing capabilities of FDM printers, limited variations in filament selection, and efficiency in terms of manufacturing.
The output of this design is an enclosure whose dimensions can be adjusted to meet the needs of the many variations in size of open FDM type 3D printers available on the market. Not only that, the enclosure that will be designed also has heating features and an air circulation system so that it can accommodate a wide variety of filament choices that are usually used in 3D printing on FDM printers. Meanwhile, the design style used in this product is industrial, where this design style has an aesthetic approach inspired by factories and industrial spaces. This style emphasizes raw materials, clearly visible building structures, and functional elements.
