EXPLORATION OF UPCYCLING MARBLE WASTE INTO FURNITURE PRODUCT CAFE

Background

Tulungagung is an area that is well-known as a producer or center for marble crafts in Indonesia. The location of the marble industry is located in the southern part of Tulungagung, namely Campurdarat District and Besuki District, especially in Gamping Village and Besole Village. There are 42 marble industries in Gamping Village. Along the road along the Ngrowo River in Wates Village, many marble cutting factories. Some of the products produced by the marble industry have standard sizes that have been results of these cuts produce waste pieces of marble. The local community does not reuse this waste because it is too small in size and low quality. The remaining pieces of marble waste can be reprocessed into products with aesthetics and high selling value using the upcycling method. Products that have potential from processing marble waste are terrazzo furniture products. Coffee Shop is a growing business in Indonesia with an attractive interior style. From this phenomenon, the authors conducted a design regarding the exploration of waste material left over from pieces of marble into terrazzo furniture products. Marble material which has strength and beauty in its style has great potential to be developed into coffee shop furniture products. This design is expected to increase the value of marble waste and prevent the accumulation of marble waste which is at risk of environmental pollution. The results of this design are stools, coffee tables and barstools.
