HANGING WALLET DESIGN FOR BLIND PEOPLE

Abstract

This design aims to design a hanging wallet specifically for the blind that can be used when doing activities outside the home with features that help the blind to organize their belongings. The blind have impaired vision so that they have difficulty in carrying out their activities when they are outside the home. In this design, the author uses a qualitative design method with in-depth interview and shadowing techniques to explore the needs of the blind. The author’s design concept for designing a hanging wallet specifically for the blind is safe, organize, informative. Safe refers to the outer slot that has a closure, the material used is genuine cowhide because of its good durability, and a comfortable strap. Organize refers to the layout of each slot according to the needs of the belongings. Informative refers to geometric markers which are an innovation from the author so that the blind can more easily distinguish between the slots. From the design development carried out, 3 series of this hanging wallet were produced, namely the Black Celo Series, the Cognac Tera Series, and the Tan Sepa Series. After that, the author conducted user testing of the product to several users from the blind to get feedback on the development of a more optimal hanging wallet. The results of feedback from users on this design, there are still some shortcomings that can be developed further, namely there are still jammed parts and also the strap of the Tan Sepa Series. In addition, in terms of markers, it can also be developed further by utilizing other alternatives, besides the geometric tactile markers used by the author, such as other types of tactile or by applying technology.
