MODULAR FURNITURE DESIGN FOR NEW AND LEFTOVER MATERIAL STORAGE IN ITS PRODUCT DESIGN PROTOMODEL LABORATORY

Abstract

Laboratories play a crucial role in providing students with practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge. A prime example is the product design laboratory in the Product Design Department at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS). This laboratory is used for various projects involving a wide range of materials. The main challenge faced is the effective and efficient management of materials. With the large number of students and the diversity of materials used, the need for a structured storage system becomes imperative. Moreover, global trends emphasizing sustainability and waste reduction further drive the need for innovative solutions in managing leftover materials. Data collection was conducted through interviews with users and stakeholders, as well as location and user observations in the laboratory as a case study. Data analysis was carried out to identify specific problems and needs. The design goal is to facilitate laboratory users in storing, managing, and organizing materials comfortably and effectively in one area. The material storage design concept includes three main innovations. First, grouping each type of material stored to facilitate access and management of materials in storage. Second, the use of flexible modules that can be rearranged according to needs to provide adaptable solutions. Third, the application of labeling systems to aid users, especially students, in effectively storing materials. The storage design consists of two sections: one for new materials and another for remnant materials. The remnant material section uses modular modules that group materials based on type and shape, and is equipped with trolley wheels to facilitate mobility and use. The storage design for materials stored in the laboratory, both new and remnant, consists of two sections: one section for new materials and another for remnant materials, which includes modular modules that group materials based on type and shape, and is equipped with trolley wheels to facilitate user convenience and mobility.
