SUGAR CANE WASTE (BAGASSE) AS A BASIC MATERIAL FOR UPPER SANDAL

Abstract

Sugarcane waste is a residue produced from the sugarcane milling process in very large quantities, reaching 35-50% of the total milled sugarcane. Sugarcane bagasse waste has great potential to be used as a raw material for environmental friendly fashion products. This study aims to explore the utilization of sugarcane bagasse waste as a base material for making women’s sandal uppers. The methods used include literature studies, experiments on mixing bagasse with various composites, ergonomic analysis of Indonesian women’s feet, and user preference analysis. The results showed that a mixture of 15% silicone with 75% bagasse at a thickness of 1mm produces a material that has a natural texture, good flexibility, is lightweight and comfortable as a sandal upper. The resulting sandal design carries a minimalist and elegant concept by utilizing the natural texture of bagasse. This product offers an environmentally friendly fashion solution while meeting user preferences for comfortable and stylish sandals. Utilization of sugarcane bagasse waste as a sandal material has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry while opening up new economic opportunities.
