The definition of the body of knowledge in the field of Design as written in the NASAD Handbook edition 2022-2023 is as follows:

1. Studio

Theory, practice, and experience taught in the studio atmosphere are important in preparing students for the stage of professional design career. The quality and quality of the student’s work is determined by the competence of the studio lectures conducted at the institute of design education. The design of the work encompasses concepts, processes, production of work, and criticism.
Thus, students should:

  • Achieving basic functional competencies i.e. visual organization, including the ability to process 2-dimensional and 3-dimension visual elements, the theory of colors and their applications, as well as drawing.
  • Be able to present work with professional and industry standards to demonstrate conceptual, visionary, and technical understanding.
  • Understand the history, current issues, processes, technologies, and direction of development in the field of visual communication design.
  • Have the opportunity to exhibit work, have experience, and engage in criticism and discussion related to their work and the work of others2.

2. History of Art, Theory, and Criticism.

Through comprehensive lectures related to the history of visual communication design, students should:

  • Learn to analyze the design work of both world design and Indonesian design work critically
  • Build an understanding of the general elements and vocabulary on visual communications design as well as the relationship between such elements, and be able to apply this knowledge in analysis.
  • Be able to explain a visual communication design work in the context of history, culture, and style.

3. Technology.

Students master the knowledge of technology and tools according to the competence of expertise.

4. Synthesis.

Students should be able to work independently in solving a variety of design problems by combining skills acquired in the studio, analysis, history, and technology according to the problems faced.
