The Mata Hati Community (KMH) is a community of persons with disabilities in Indonesia. Founded in 2000, KMH is a community built on humanity. KMH’s noble ideals to build a sense of caring among others in society continues to make it whole so that it becomes a caring home for others.
One of the lecturers from the Department of Informatics Engineering (DTI), Dr. Surya Sumpeno, S.T., M.Sc. has an old friend who is one of the administrators at the Mata Hati Community. Determined to move forward together, KMH invites collaboration with ITS. Furthermore, the implementation of the collaboration begins with submissions to the faculty level, with the Faculty of Intelligent Electrical and Informatics Technology (FT-EIC) in early 2022. A joint team was formed from lecturers and students from the Department of Informatics Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering.
Observations for the FT-EIC project with KMH started with a project survey. Research, chat, and find out what aspects the joint team can help with. Siska Arifiani, S.Kom., M.Kom., one of the lecturers in the joint team said that the survey process was quite complicated due to the limited knowledge of the team members to communicate with KMH members with disabilities. Exchanging stories, and opinions, and chatting is their way of observing. Melt with the people, the language. Apart from observing by communicating, the team also made independent observations regarding the type of disability and researched so that the application was carried out correctly later.
The collaboration project is running with the first mission to develop the official KMH website. The official KMH website can be seen at http://www.komunitasmatahati.org. The team developed a new website for KMH by adding aesthetic elements to its appearance and creating special features for persons with disabilities. Realizing that users and administrators of the KMH website vary, a website display feature is made for the types of disabilities that exist. It was pioneered according to WCAG standards for dyslexia. The team’s pilot website has not been published and can be temporarily accessed via the following page https://juang-akhir-ten.vercel.app/.
Apart from developing the website, the team is also looking for innovations that can be developed for KMH. There was an idea to make an application to make it easier for the blind and deaf to travel. The application entitled KIAT: Collection of Accessibility Information for Disabilities was specially developed in order to find out whether the location you are going to has facilities for disabilities. Several facilities are aimed at people with disabilities such as stairs, bathrooms, and sidewalks. With the KIAT application, users can track the availability of these facilities or not. Now, the application has been completed and was awarded 1st place in GEMASTIK in 2022 in the 8th Software Development division.
