On Saturday, January 4, 2025, the handover ceremony for the Section Chair of IEEE Indonesia took place, marking the end of Prof. Ir. Gamantyo H., M.Eng., Ph.D. ‘s leadership of IEEE Indonesia Section from 2023 to 2024. Prof. Gamantyo is a lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering, ITS, and has played a significant role in IEEE Indonesia Section, with his outstanding contributions in the field of electrical technology. He has not only inspired students but also supported various initiatives to develop and advance the academic and professional community in Indonesia, particularly in the field of electrical engineering. On this occasion, Prof. Gamantyo shared his thoughts on his leadership journey, successful programs that have been implemented, and the challenges he faced during his tenure.

Taking on the role of Section Chair IEEE Indonesia is a significant responsibility that offers numerous opportunities to contribute to the development of science and technology. Prof. Gamantyo stated that his main motivation in accepting this position was to strengthen the professional network in Indonesia, as well as collaborate with researchers, lecturers, industry practitioners, and students to advance technology in the country. Additionally, IEEE provides an opportunity for Indonesia to play an active role at the global level, especially in the field of electrical technology.

During his leadership, Prof. Gamantyo successfully implemented many flagship programs. One of these was enhancing IEEE Indonesia’s role in various international forums. In 2023 and 2024, Indonesia succeeded in inviting the IEEE President to attend roundtable discussions on important issues such as renewable energy and the role of women in the engineering and industry sectors. Prof. Gamantyo also secured funding to support community service activities that have been highly beneficial for younger generations, especially high school and middle school students. Several students also received scholarships from IEEE Society, particularly in the fields of Antenna and Propagation and Signal Processing.

Managing IEEE Indonesia Section, with members spread across various islands in Indonesia, was no easy task. However, Prof. Gamantyo managed to overcome this challenge by enhancing cooperation between student branches at various universities. Activities such as IEEE Day and IEEE Indonesia Section Student Congress were successfully held thanks to solid coordination between various parties, including students from universities across Indonesia. Prof. Gamantyo is very optimistic about the future development of IEEE Indonesia Section. He hopes that students and lecturers at ITS, particularly in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Smart Informatics (FT-EIC), will become more active in participating in IEEE. IEEE membership provides great opportunities to network and engage in programs that can support career and educational advancement. Prof. Gamantyo also expressed hope that the future leadership of IEEE Indonesia Section could strengthen cooperation with ASEAN countries through the Southeast Asia Council, aimed at developing international conferences and fostering closer ties between nations in the Southeast Asia region.
