Taiwan-Indonesia Low-Carbon Construction Workshop.

In response to climate change and the goal of achieving zero emissions by 2050, Taiwan Tech hosted a “Low-Carbon Construction Workshop” on campus from April 22nd to 25^th to explore the latest development trends and technological innovations in the field of low-carbon construction materials. Major construction materials, including cement, reinforced steel, and aluminum, have high carbon footprints. Additionally, buildings consume a significant amount of energy for air conditioning and lighting throughout their lifecycle, contributing to an estimated 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions from the construction and building sector.

The “Taiwan-Indonesia Science and Technology Innovation Center” invited twenty distinguished guests from Taiwan and Indonesia, including Director Nugroho from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) of Indonesia, Professor Januarti from Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology of Indonesia, and Dr. Asih from the Indonesian Youth Academy of Sciences. The program included visits to domestic industrial companies located at Bali Port Engineering in Bali and the Ready-Mixed Concrete Plant in Yangmei operated by Ruentex Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., allowing participants to gain firsthand knowledge of the manufacturing process and application technology of low-carbon building materials.

This workshop attracted approximately 70 participants from Taiwan, around 50 from New Southbound Policy countries, and about 20 from other countries. It not only deepened cooperation between Taiwan and Indonesia in the circular economy but also demonstrated the commitment of both countries to carbon reduction and creating a sustainable future together.

President Jia-Yush Yen of Taiwan Tech pointed out in his opening speech on April 22nd that he appreciated the support from the National Science Council. Over the past three years, the Taiwan-Indonesia Science and Technology Innovation Center has focused on the circular economy and green technology. It has leveraged the expertise and networks of Taiwan Tech’s 1,700 outstanding alumni in Indonesia to introduce Taiwan’s experience in promoting the circular economy, establishing partnerships between Taiwan and Indonesia in the industry, government, and academia sectors, and deepening technological cooperation between the two countries.

On the first day of the “Low-Carbon Construction Workshop”, President Liang-Zheng Lu of the Taiwan Construction Research Institute and General Manager Chung-Jen Jin of Yatung Readymixed Concrete delivered keynote speeches. Additionally, 10 representatives from Taiwan and Indonesia, including Director Nugroho from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) of Indonesia, Professor Januarti from Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology of Indonesia, and Dr. Asih from the Indonesian Youth Academy of Sciences, as well as guests such as Chief Deputy Factory Manager Chih-Hsien Chen from Asia Cement Corporation, Professor Yu-Min Su from the Department of Civil Engineering at National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Professor Jieh-Haur Chen from the Department of Civil Engineering at National Central University, and Product and Technology Manager Chia-En Tsai from Taiwan Cement, and General Manager Ming-Hung Hsieh from the Goldsun Co., Ltd, delivered speeches at the conference.

It is worth mentioning that the Indonesian guests were deeply impressed by the two days of visits. They praised Taiwan’s innovative technology and industrial development in low-carbon building materials. They also looked forward to future investments or technology transfers from Taiwan’s green enterprises to the New Southbound countries.

This “Low-Carbon Construction Workshop” not only brought rich exchanges and mutual learning between the industry, government, and academia sectors of Taiwan and Indonesia but also further deepened and expanded the cooperative partnership between the two countries. The exchanges and cooperation between the two sides will bring more opportunities for the development of low-carbon construction and promote the common growth and progress of both countries in this field.
