Innovation from Department of Informatics and Teams using the Minecraft Platform for Online Graduation

The 121rd ITS graduation uses a fairly unique concept. ITS presents a virtual graduation procession using the Minecraft video game series platform. Reporting from the official account @ITS_campus, the reenactment of this virtual graduation was made through Minecraft Education Edition from the Department of Informatics and the Directorate of Technology and Information Systems Development (DPTSI) – ITS. One of the developers is ITS Department of Informatics Engineering lecturer, Hadziq Fabroyir SKom PhD.

Starting with the likes of Hadziq and 14 other people playing Minecraft, the development team took the initiative to create a virtual building to enliven the graduation that was supposed to be held in March 2020. The operation of this Minecraft graduation was aired via Zoom and Youtube. ITS leaders also attended the procession at the ITS Research Center while still paying attention to health protocols.

One of the crew behind the scenes with the @umbaraSM account also shared how the live streaming process for Minecraft graduations. “I’m proud of you, the @ITStv_official crew, even though the loading and rehearsal took almost 12 hours, but it was a huge success!” he said.

Whereas @ needhealing121, which calls itself the Minecraft “graduation committee”, inspires photos after graduation ends.

Although conducted online, ITS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ir Mochamad Ashari MEng who led the procession was optimistic that the graduation could cure longing for the end of the lecture at ITS which was postponed due to many considerations on 15 March. “Actually, ITS has been waiting for the right time so that (graduation) can be carried out as usual, it turns out the conditions say differently,” he said while giving a speech.

Regarding next semester or odd semester which will be held online, the chancellor who is familiarly called Ashari revealed that the 122nd ITS Graduation Ceremony could later be carried out offline or returned online, depending on the current conditions. “But actually, there are many ITS students who prefer to have graduations offline,” he concluded.
