The Department of Informatics, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), held a public lecture that presented a Guest Lecturer from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, Prof. Wen-Huang Cheng on Friday, October 22, 2021. Shintami Chusnul Hidayati, S.Kom., M.Sc., Ph.D., a lecturer at the Department of Informatics, ITS, became the moderator at the event. Due to an ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the event was held online through the Zoom Cloud Meeting application and live-streamed on the YouTube channel of the Department of Informatics, ITS. Notwithstanding, this guest lecture which is about “Fashion Meets Computer Vision” received great enthusiasm, with more than 190 participants attending. The event was part of the Implementation of the Independent Campus Competition Program (Program Kompetisi Kampus Merdeka, PKKM).
As an introduction, Prof. Wen-Huang Cheng explained the background of why he chose to deliver this topic. In particular, he has conducted fashion research for a long time, from 2014 until now. Notably, the research milestone in his lab is “AI for Fashion”. He mentioned that the global fashion clothing market alone has surpassed 3 trillion US dollars today and accounts for nearly 2% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product. Therefore, we can understand that fashion has a great economic impact, especially, fashion style is how we present ourselves to the world.
The material presented by Prof. Wen-Huang Cheng was about the main aspects for enabling intelligent fashion: (1) fashion detection; (2) fashion analysis; (3) fashion synthesis; and (4) fashion recommendation. Fashion detection, which is the basis for most extended works, aims to predict the positions of the items defined on the clothes. Fashion analysis is about what style people choose to wear, containing attribute recognition, style learning, and popularity prediction. For fashion synthesis, the purpose is to synthesize realistic-looking images. The task involves style transfer, pose transformation, and physical simulation. Meanwhile, in fashion recommendations, the key is to automatically suggest fashion items to users with minimized user efforts.
At the end of the event, head of the Department of Informatics, ITS, Dr. Eng. Chastine Fatichah, S.Kom., M.Kom. expressed her gratitude to Prof. Wen – Huang Cheng for his attractive and informative talk.
