Guest Lecture On Smartphone Addiction By Dr. Beryl Noe

The widespread use of smartphones affects people’s lives in Indonesia, so the Department of Informatics invited Dr. Beryl Noe from the School of Computer Science and Informatics, Cardiff University, UK. She was the speaker on this guest lecture who was presenting about “Smartphone Addiction”. This guest lecture held by Program Kompetisi Kampus Merdeka on Thursday 11 November 2021 at 16.00 WIB through a zoom meeting. The moderator of this guest lecture was Dr. Baskoro Adi, He is a lecturer from the Department of Informatics Engineering, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. This guest lecture was attended by approximately 69 participants.

Dr. Beryl Noe was part of the School of Computer Science and Informatics for more than five years. She is currently working on a research project in collaboration with the School of Social Sciences and the Aneurin Bevan Health Board. Dr. Beryl’s research focuses on how smartphone user interaction events can be used as proxies for smartphone usage behavior, but she had also looked at user behavior, user mood, and smartphone addiction.

Dr. Beryl gave some questions to the participants regarding the use of smartphones before starting the guest lecture. The material presented by Dr. Beryl regarding smartphone addiction are: (1) Antecedents of smartphone addiction, (2) Pathways to Smartphone Addiction, (3) Consequences of Smartphone Addiction, and (4) Reducing of Smartphone Addiction.

The antecedents of smartphone addiction are the lack of self-control, habits, depression, stress, and others. Pathways to smartphone addiction have few different levels, the first one is ubiquitous and socially accepted, the second one is an increasing number of functions such as users are more dependent on their cellphones, and the last one is applications design that prolong usage. The consequences of smartphone addiction that will often be felt by the public, one example is poor sleep quality due to using smartphones too often such that it can affect health. And there were several ways to reduce smartphone addiction, which was conveyed by Dr. Beryl, namely, increasing information such as information related to the health effects of using smartphones too often, reinforcing self-discipline and support for better management, and lastly, put constraints on smartphone use.

At the end of the session Mr. Baskoro Adi as moderator expressed his gratitude for the informative talk and taking the time to attend guest lectures and provide useful knowledge. He hopes to be able to do guest lectures again next time
