Daring to step out of his comfort zone and venture into a field rarely explored by engineering students, Aldius Rizky Asantrinova, an Information Systems student at ITS, has proven that the world of diplomacy can also be mastered by technology students. He successfully led an international United Nations (UN) simulation held in Surabaya, gaining invaluable experience in leadership and global negotiations.
Aldius has participated twice in the Model United Nations (MUN), a simulation of UN sessions that hones diplomatic, negotiation, and leadership skills. In his first attempt, he received an Honorable Mention, a prestigious recognition in the international event. His second opportunity brought him to an even more prominent role, leading a session on “Legalization of Medical Use of Cannabis Worldwide” under the mandate of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
As the session leader, Aldius was responsible for ensuring that discussions remained productive and aligned with international diplomatic ethics. With participants representing delegations from various countries, differing perspectives posed a significant challenge. Heated debates often arose, particularly when certain delegations insisted on imposing solutions on other nations. This is where Aldius’ role was truly tested—controlling the discussions, maintaining objectivity, and ensuring the session remained focused on finding global solutions.
“Standing at the front with the gavel in hand, I felt nervous but also proud. It’s not just about striking the gavel; it is a sacred symbol in diplomacy,“ Aldius shared.
For him, participating in MUN was more than just an academic experience; it was a journey to strengthen his leadership and diplomatic skills. He learned how to listen to different perspectives, negotiate effectively, and unite various countries to create collective solutions. To him, leadership in an international forum is not just about leading but also about bridging different national interests.
Aldius is not stopping here. He is now striving to step onto an even bigger international stage by applying as a delegate at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and dreams of contributing to UN simulations at Harvard and Paris.
“As an ITS student, where technology and programming dominate, I wanted to try something different. I want to prove that we can also make an impact in diplomacy,“ said Aldius.
He also encouraged other students not to hesitate in exploring new fields, even outside their usual expertise. “Don’t be afraid to go against the mainstream. If you never try, you have already lost the opportunity to learn.” With his courage and determination, Aldius not only makes himself proud but also proves that engineering students, particularly from ITS, are capable of competing in the world of international diplomacy.
