Celebrating Indonesia’s Independence Day, a Team of Interior Design ITS Lecturer and Student Held a Pottery Workshop and Competition

Enthusiasm in celebrating Indonesia’s Independence Day, motivates a team of lecturer and students from the Laboratory of Interior Aesthetics to create a program that could deliver creativity through a pottery workshop and competition. This project also acts as a community service that was initiated by the Laboratory of Interior Aesthetic, Department of Interior Design ITS.

held on August 3rd, 2024, the community service became a stepping stone for lecturers, students, and the local community to welcome the Day of Independence. The concept of this community service is to implement a pottery workshop while also holding a pottery competition as a complimentary activity. This project simply aims to bring a new innovation about preserving the arts of pottery and supporting locals through an education about pottery and ceramic crafts.

The community service that had been planned since early july 2024, was an ideation from the Head and also the Lecturer in Laboratory of Interior Aesthetics, Aria Weny Anggraita, S.T., M.MT., alongside with Ir. Nanik Rachmaniyah, M.T. and Onna Anieqo Tanadda, S.Ds., M.Ds. The official title of this community service project is “Workshop and Competition of Pottery Creation in Commemorating Indonesia’s Independence Day”. Pottery itself is one of the specialty and a based practical skill that represents the Laboratory of Interior Aesthetics in the Department of Interior Design ITS. Pottery is also included in one of the courses in Interior Design ITS called accessory design, that mainly focuses on creating ceramic crafts such as vases, plates, mugs and others.
Implementing the curriculum in the project has helped Interior Design ITS achieve the goal to introduce the culture and skills in pottery to the local community. The workshop and competition that was held in Semolowaru Street, RT 3 RW 4, involved a team of students from Interior Design ITS as volunteers in the community service, the team consist of Vina Santhica, Nur Maulidiyah Rohmatu S. and Rafly Bahy Shafwan. The project targeted people in the local community, specifically the housewives from Semolowaru Streets RT 3 RW 4, and it was held in one of the lecturer’s home from the Lab. of Interior Aesthetics, Ir. Nanik Rachmaniyah, M.T.

The workshop consists of an introduction to the basics of pottery skills and the procedure of making a ceramic craft. Followed by a competition, it aims to further implement and act as a practice method in pottery making, especially for the housewives of Semolowaru Streets RT 3 RW 4

Hopefully, the workshop and the pottery competition can act as a bridge of socialization between the Interior Design ITS academic community to the local people about the importance of cultural preservation on ceramic arts and crafts. Beside that, this project also aims to help the local community to explore creativity and produce more local arts & crafts that could potentially help the locals to create a small crafting business, as a way to enrich and help stabilize the economy.

The community service project helped the Interior Design ITS lecturer in creating a social impact on pottery tradition to the local community. The project also gave a learning experience for the volunteering students that participated. The knowledge development on event management to workshop concept ideation, also brought the students to become more active. Lecturers and students of Interior Design ITS can also help in actively solving problems that the local community faces, as well as contributing to the preservation of the existing culture in Indonesia, and to further ignite the spirit for Indonesia’s Independence Day.
