Supporting Tourism in Surabaya, Department of Interior Design ITS Construct a Virtual Tour of Hos Tjokroaminoto Museum
The Department of Interior Design ITS gave learning experiences far more than studying in class. Students are now actively involved in creating an interactive way of learning and implementing skills in real-life conditions. Community service is one of the many ways for students to experience and learn problem solving in interior design on a daily basis and the environment that surrounds them.
The Community service project that was initiated in the midst of July 2024, focuses on the technology of Virtual Tour with the title, “Design and Development of a Web-Based Virtual Tour for the Hos Tjokroaminoto Museum to Support the Promotion of Heritage Tourism in the City of Surabaya”. The community service project aims to resolve the lack of public interest in historical places, in this case the Hos Tjokroaminoto Museum. As mentioned before, the project focuses on creating a virtual tour that will become a tool for promoting the museum as one of the most historical places in East Java, Surabaya.
Seeing the importance of history about Indonesia’s independence made Hos Tjokroaminoto museum as one of the most valuable historical places. It signifies the process of Indonesia’s Independence, and most importantly, it became a witness to Soekarno’s early college life in Surabaya, long before he was involved in politics and thus became the first president of Indonesia. But oddly, there are still a huge amount of Indonesian people that don’t recognize the Hos Tjokroaminoto museum.
The web-based virtual tour on Hos Tjokroaminoto is managed by the head and lecturer in Laboratory of Interior Science and Technology, Okta Putra Setio Ardianto, S.T., M.T., with the help of Dr. Mahendra Wardhana, S.T., M.T., Thomas Ari Kristianto, S.Sn., M.T., Anggra Ayu Rucitra, S.T, M.MT., Caesario Ari Budianto, S.T., M.T., dan Yaritsa Husni Sabiela, S.Ds., M.Ds. Other than the the team of lecturer, the project also had a team consist of chosen students from the laboratory of Interior Science and Technology, members of the team are; Pingky Amelia, Regina Eliza Novitasari, Fahrusiva Atho’illah Chisti, Akmal Wildan Assegaf, and Gheriya Danish Azzahra. The team aims to make the virtual tour of the museum as a “preview” for the people who want to visit and it can be accessed through a web on a mobile phone or a laptop. The virtual tour itself consists of the whole 3D Render of the entire Hos Tjokroaminoto museum, whereas a reset that was done in last year 2023 only consisted of the bed chamber of Soekarno.
Lack of road access and the unstrategic place of this museum became a factor of the disinterest in local tourism, that is why the virtual tour is needed. That statement was delivered by the head member of the project, Pingky Amelia, a third year student in Interior Design ITS. In the Interview, she mentioned that the virtual tour will also help the local government to promote the historical place in Surabaya and further elevate the value of Heritage tourism. In addition, the project helps students of Interior Design ITS on learning and implementing 3D Rendering skills, web-development, and furthermore on advertisement.
Above all, The Department of Interior Design ITS hope that this Community service project can act as a boost to the popularity and the continuity of the Hos Tjokroaminoto Museum, while being a learning opportunity for the students to enrich their knowledge on technology and exploration on further historical discoveries.
