ASEM (Asia European Meeting), an information-sharing forum among Asian and European countries, launched ASEM Work Placement Pilot Programme (ASEM-WP), a work-based experience mobility program that enables participating higher education institutions to exchange students abroad for two to six months period of work placement or internship in a designated partner company. The participating countries in this network include Germany, Belgium, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand and Indonesia. In the case of Indonesia, ASEM-WP allows participating Indonesian higher education to send students for an internship to Germany and Belgium as well as receiving students from Germany and Belgium for an internship in Indonesian-based national or multinational companies.

The Indonesian Ministry of Research and Higher Education invited eleven participating universities to collaborate with Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) and Association of Indonesian Entrepreneurs (APINDO) to conduct this AWP programme. The universities include Universitas Indonesia (UI), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB), Padjadjaran University (UNPAD), Sebelas Maret University (UNS), Airlangga University (UNAIR), Diponegoro University (UNDIP), Brawijaya University (UB) and Bina Nusantara University (UBINUS). 

AWP offers students an opportunity to apply acquired knowledge and skills to real-life in intercultural setting; an orientation to the business environment, operations and procedures in an international environment; an experience supporting cross-cultural understanding, skill and competencies. In order to apply in this program, applicants should fulfill several requirements which are as follows:

  • An active undergraduate (currently in 5th – 8th semester) or master student
  • Having remarkably good command of English, both oral and written (TOEFL score of at least 500 or IELTS score of at least 6)
  • Willing to be placed in Germany or Belgium
  • Having good understanding of living in different culture
  • Having minimum GPA of 3.25 (out of 4.0 scale)

Students who would like to apply should prepare the following documents :

  • Recent academic transcript
  • TOEFL or IELTS score result
  • Expression of interest letter
  • A letter stating parent’s permit
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV template and guidelines can be downloaded here)

The aforementioned documents should be submitted directly to the company. List of prospective company can be downloaded here. In addition, applicants should register themselves in the following link http://cdc.ui.ac.id/AWP/ and report to SAC before June 30th, to apply for scholarship (airfare ticket) from Directorate General of Higher Education. Applicants should cover their airfare ticket and living cost during the program. Germany company will give a paycheck to the interns, whereas Belgium company will not.
