To reach the program of Top Global University in Japan, 40 students from Kumamoto University came to Indonesia on 19 February 2018 to join Global Leadership Camp. Global Leadership Camp (GLC) is a collaborative program conducted by Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) with Kumamoto University designed to improve and enhance the leadership skills of both ITS and Kumamoto University participants. This program was held from 20 February – 3 March 2018.
The first day at ITS, participants were welcomed by the beauty of Indonesian traditional dance. After that, the program was officially opened by Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Partnership, Prof. Ketut Buda Artana. The next several days, participants both from Kumamoto University and ITS got some courses about leadership delivered by Head of ITS International Office, Dr. Maria Anityasari, and lecturer from Department of Industrial Engineering, Ms. Mar’atus Sholihah, S.T, M.T. They also met great leaders from Surabaya to learn how to be a great leader.
To ease the Japanese participants during their stay in Surabaya, Indonesian Language Course was delivered by volunteers of ITS International Office. In this class, intermediate and practical Bahasa Indonesia was taught and interesting activities were held to make the process more interactive and applicable, such as shopping at ITS weekly Friday market.
In addition to indoor classes, participants also visited Consulate General Japan and several Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) in Surabaya. They did not just make a visit, but they also learned about leadership aspect from the leader of the Consulate General and SMEs. After participants got skills and knowledge from many points of view, participants were divided into groups and conducted a Leadership Project. This Leadership Project was done in Broadband Learning Center (BLC) in Surabaya. BLC is a facility provided by the City Government of Surabaya in various areas to provide learning information and technology to a citizen of Surabaya. Currently, there are more than 30 BLCs spread all over Surabaya. Although the citizens of Surabaya have felt the benefits of the existence of BLC, many BLCs have not embraced the community. So, the purpose of this project was to make the better BLCs.
Lastly, participants had to present their projects. Every group had to present what they had done to make their assigned BLC better. Before the program end, to show the beauty and tourism objects of East Java, participants went on an adventure to Mount Bromo and also did a rafting. Participants enjoyed the beauty of sunrise and also they experienced a horse riding in Mount Bromo.
As the participants returned home with newly-found spirit to break through any challenges like Great Leaders they met here, Global Leadership Camp 2018 marked the beginning of many future collaborations between ITS and Kumamoto University.
