Initiated during the “1^st Conference on China-ASEAN Cooperation of Science and Technology” on July 29, 2017, SMART OCEAN consortium was established with members of several universities in China and ASEAN. In the conference, under the general framework of Science & Technology collaboration, a specific session themed on Smart Ocean was scheduled for the cohort of Chinese and ASEAN experts and scholars to have in-depth discussions revolving around four topics, i.e. Smart Ocean & e-Navigation Technology, Marine Ecology & Disaster Prevention, Marine Engineering & Monitoring Technology, and Marine Scientific & People-to-people Exchanges.

Tianjin University as the chair of SMART OCEAN, invited members including ITS in the development of SMART OCEAN Education Center. On August 21, 2018, ITS appointed Dr. Raja Oloan Saut Gurning as the Deputy Director of the center from ITS’ side, and Dr.rer-nat. Edwin Setiawan as the Committee Member and Contact Person.

Guest Lectures

In September 2021, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) had successfully conducted the online program called “2021 Smart Ocean Month for Future Maritime Leaders” in collaborating with Tianjin University, China. This program was conducted every Tuesday start from 7 September – 28 September at 03.30 PM (GMT+7) and was attended not by ITS and TJU participants but also participant from University/Institution from Indonesia. Through 2021 Smart Ocean Month for Future Maritime Leaders, ITS and TJU committed to open more opportunities for young engineers and researchers to connect and gain networks, as well as to gain knowledge on Sustainable Development Goals related to maritime.

There were four topics which brought at this program as follows: Maritime Business and Marine Tourism, Marine Plastic Pollution, Marine Safety and Virtual Reality and Seabed Mapping – Benefits & Challenges.
