Cyber security is an effort to protect computer systems from attacks and illegal access. Data from the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) states that there are more than 1.22 billion cases of cyber attacks every day. Data shows that in Indonesia itself there have been many cases of horrendous and dangerous cyber attacks. For example, the Bjorka case which was very popular in 2022, then the Indonesian Sharia Bank (BSI) data case was leaked in the middle of this year. This means that cyber security is a serious and important case to pay attention to in the current era of digitalization.
This is what underlies the Community Service KKN Team, Department of Information Technology, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, to organize training which will be held on October 28 2023 at the Muhammadiyah 4 Surabaya Elementary School. With a team consisting of 10 students and 2 supervisors from the Department of Information Technology, Henning Titi Ciptaningtyas, S.Kom., M.Kom and Annisaa Sri Indrawanti, S.Kom., M.Kom. Therefore, the Information Technology administration team is aggressively contributing to increasing awareness by holding training for elementary school teachers throughout Surabaya
As a speaker, Henning expressed the importance of training, especially for elementary school teachers who might not be considered to need to study this kind of topic. The increasing spread of social media and computerization means that students at school can easily access the internet. The Information Technology lecturer also said that apart from being able to support participants’ role as teachers, this training could also help educate individuals to be more aware of cyber security. “Cybersecurity is fundamental knowledge that is important, especially for the protection of personal data,” She explained.
High enthusiasm is clear evidence of increased awareness
This training is not only providing material, but also providing practical assistance, including how to set a strong password and how to maintain the security of personal data. Some useful web tools include the web to check whether your email is safe or not and how strong the password you have created is. One of the speakers, Muhammad Ilham Yumna as a student at the ITS Information Technology Department and the community administration team explained about online networking security such as safe ways to use WiFi and browsers as well as the practice of security checks on PCs/Laptops. During the training period, the enthusiasm of elementary school teachers throughout Surabaya as participants was clearly visible through interactions with speakers.
One of the participants, Muammar Kadafi, a teacher at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Muhammadiyah 28 Surabaya, explained that this training was something new for him. “Similar training has never been held, especially for elementary school teachers, so I think this is an interesting and very helpful experience, especially the practice session on the platform to check whether email is safe or not,” he said when interviewed.
