MKPI ITS – As part of efforts to enhance public awareness of disaster mitigation, MKPI ITS, in collaboration with the East Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), has introduced an innovative technology called TENPINA Virtual Reality (VR). This groundbreaking tool was officially launched on Thursday (19/12) at the Disaster Education Park of East Java BPBD and is expected to serve as an effective educational platform for students and the general public.
Siska Arifiani, S.Kom., M.Kom., Coordinator of the TENPINA VR Development Team, explained that the technology is designed to support disaster mitigation strategies implemented by East Java BPBD. Using VR, users can experience immersive simulations of real-world disaster scenarios. TENPINA VR focuses on three primary disasters: floods, fires, and earthquakes, covering three critical phases: pre-disaster (mitigation), during the disaster, and post-disaster. To enhance the educational experience, the simulations feature scenarios in three different settings: residential homes, offices, and factories. Future developments aim to expand the scenarios to include schools and hospitals.
This project is a multidisciplinary collaboration involving various departments at ITS. Prof. Adjie Pamungkas, S.T., M.Dev.Plg., Ph.D., from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, contributed as the Head of the MKPI Research Center. Meanwhile, Okta Putra Setio Ardianto, S.T., M.T., from the Department of Interior Design, led the creation of 3D design models, and Retno Widyaningrum, S.T., M.T., MBA, Ph.D., from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, was responsible for developing disaster evacuation scenarios. Additionally, the Department of Informatics played a vital role in realizing the virtual environments within the VR application.
Adhy Karyono, Acting Governor of East Java, expressed high appreciation for this innovation. He emphasized the importance of disaster simulation technology like TENPINA VR in fostering early preparedness among communities. “We fully support this initiative as it significantly contributes to disaster management efforts in East Java,” he stated.
