The Technology and Business Innovation Laboratory is the only laboratory within the Interdisciplinary School of Management and Technology at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (MT ITS). This laboratory originated from the Business Computing Research Group (2014), which later evolved into the Business Computing Laboratory (2018). In line with the development of scientific trends and organizational needs, it was rebranded in 2020 as the Technology and Business Innovation Laboratory.
Located at the ITS Tjokroaminoto Campus, the laboratory facilitates various Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi activities within MT ITS. Its strategic issues are outlined in the laboratory’s roadmap, which aligns with ITS’s research roadmap. The focus areas include management analysis research on the development of applied technology in the fields of economics, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, maritime, IoT, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Information and Communication Technology (ICT), as well as research in design management and innovative business ideas.
The Master’s Program in Technology Management (MMT) at ITS was established in 1996. Unlike other programs at ITS, it operates directly under the ITS Graduate Program due to its multidisciplinary academic approach. Initially, the program did not have its own laboratory or permanent faculty. The foundation of its laboratory began with a Business Computing Research Group in around 2014, consisting of members Gita Widi Bhawika, S.ST., M.MT., and Gogor Arif Handiwibowo, ST., M.MT. Research and community service activities expanded further with the inclusion of Lissa Rosdiana Noer, ST., M.MT. (2015) and Dr. Ir. Tatang Akhmad Taufik, M.Sc. (2017) as MMT lecturers and members of this research group.
With the establishment of the Department of Technology Management and the Faculty of Business and Technology Management overseeing MMT ITS around 2017, this group was developed into the Business Computation Laboratory (Rector’s Decree No. 2454/IT2/HK.00.01/2018). Its initial roadmap was tailored to align with all courses taught in the MMT program. Faculty members conducted continuous research in line with their respective competencies and interests. The laboratory’s strength grew further with the addition of Reny Nadlifatin, S.Kom., M.BA., Ph.D., as a member in 2019.
In 2020, ITS restructured its organization. The Graduate Program in Technology Management was placed under the Faculty of Creative Design and Digital Business. Additionally, ITS reorganized its laboratories, including renaming them to align with organizational needs (Rector’s Letter No. B/18487/IT2/OT.02/2020, dated March 4, 2020). Consequently, a request was made by the department head through Letter No. T/20244/IT2.IX.6.1.5/TU.00.09/2020, dated March 11, 2020, to change the name to the Business and Technology Innovation Laboratory (BTI Lab/ITeBis), arguing that the term “Business Computation” was too narrow. Lab members aimed to conduct broader laboratory activities.
In preparation for this change, the roadmap was refined once again. The request was approved with the appointment of the BTI Lab Head in Rector’s Decree No. T/1449/IT2/HK.00.01/2020, dated April 9, 2020. By early May, the establishment of the Doctoral Program in Technology Management was approved by the ITS Academic Senate, prompting the laboratory to further develop its roadmap in alignment with the newly published ITS Research Roadmap at the end of February 2020.
Since SIMT has only one laboratory, it is intended to cover all Subject Groups (Rumpun Mata Kuliah/RMK) offered by SIMT. The curriculum structure is divided into seven areas of specialization: Industrial Management, Project Management, Information Technology Management, Maritime Business Management, Supply Chain Management, Business Analytics, and Innovation Design Management. Consequently, the laboratory is named the Technology and Business Innovation Laboratory.
The course structure for all specialization areas in the Graduate Program in Technology Management is generally consistent, comprising foundational courses, functional management courses, specialized management courses, field-specific courses, and research. Below is a detailed list of courses offered by the Graduate Program in Technology Management, which are supported by the laboratory:
