ITS Campus, ITS News – Another proud achievement came from the students of Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya, Indonesia. It was Sie Evan Setiawan who managed to steal the ‘Honorable Mention’ award at International Mathematic Competition (IMC) 2018. Evan participated in the competition for one week, from last Sunday (22/7), in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.

Before participating in the 25th IMC, Evan who majored in Mathematics often participated in similar competitions. Most recently, he won a gold medal in National Mathematics and Natural Sciences Olympiad (ONMIPA) 2018 last May. Not only that, Evan also participated in Senior High School National Science Olympiad (OSN) 2011, ONMIPA PT 2016,  and ONMIPA PT 2017. With such previous achievements, it was no wonder that he had liked maths since childhood. “I really like mathematics since the first grade of elementary school,” he admitted.

Evan’s study preparation for the olympiad had been carried out throughout the school year. Evan and the olympiad team always did joint exercises. But during the exercise, Evan and the team focused more on the newer members. “For those of us who already have more experience, we only focus practicing  during the spring semester. We often practice four hours a day on weekends, “said Evan who is originally from Borneo.

By trying to get the most out of five questions in five hours for two consecutive days, in fact, successfully delivered Evan to receive the ‘Honorable Mention’ in the competition. “Just being able to join IMC has exceeded my target. The initial target was acquiring the silver medal in national ONMIPA before,” Evan said excitedly.

At the end of the interview, Evan mentioned that he was a student from the affirmation path. He hoped that his struggle can inspire other affirmative students. “As we all know, most affirmative students didn’t finish their study or dropped out of college. I want to them (universities in Indonesia) to see that even affirmative students can also excel and earn our own achievement, ” he concluded. (id/saa)
