ITS Campus, ITS News – Department of Marine Engineering, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya held an international seminar titled International Seminar on Ocean and Coastal Engineering, Environmental and Natural Disaster Management (ISOCEEN) 2018, Wednesday (11/7). The seminar which took place at the Swiss Belinn Hotel Surabaya brought international experts in the field of marine from the Netherlands.

Held for two days, this international seminar was held to answer the problems related to marine and coastal areas in Indonesia that have become more complex. The international seminar that has been held six times has discussed the problems of marine engineering, coastal engineering and its management, especially the protection of coastal areas (coastal protection).

In collaboration with Tohoku University Japan, HZ University and Applied Sciences-Netherlands, Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) and Nuffic Internationalising Education-Netherlands, ISOCEEN 2018 brought three main speakers from the Netherlands, Prof. Dano Roelvink PhD and Assoc Prof. Alvaro Semedo PhD from IHE-Delft, and Prof. Henk Jan Verhagen PhD from TU-Delft.

In the seminar attended by 120 participants from various universities in Indonesia, the keynote speakers expressed the importance of protecting the coastal area. Important cities in Indonesia such as Surabaya, Jakarta, and Semarang are in coastal areas and are threatened with a decrease in the land surface.

Prof. Dano Roelvink said that land subsidence and other coastal areas damage can be overcome by making mangrove areas. The solution was strengthened by Prof. Henk Jan Verhagen through the results of his research that Indonesian coastal areas are suitable and ideal for planting mangroves.

Meanwhile, Assoc Prof. Alvaro Semedo conveyed the results of his research on climate modeling of seawater waves, which could serve to predict sea waves that would hit the coastal areas of Indonesia. “With the modeling, we can determine the right steps to protect Indonesia’s coastal areas, so that it can prevent damage to the coastal areas,” he said.

The seminar which is the annual event of the ITS Marine Engineering Department was attended by 42 speakers. Apart from coastal protection, the selected paper in ISOCEEN 2018 discusses various topics related to the marine sector, namely Hydrodynamics and Morphodynamics, Ocean Engineering and Offshore Technology, Port and Coastal Engineering, Coastal, Delta, River and Estuary Management and Its Environmental, Natural Disaster Management, Sea Transportation and Ship Technology, Ocean Renewable Energy and Development, and Marine Science and Technology. The paper will later be published in the Proceedings series indexed in Scopus in the MATEC Web of Conference. (yus/ITS Public Relation Officer)
