ITS Campus, ITS News – Pandemic of Covid-19 does not deter students of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) from continuing to innovate. This time, Ferdy Pradipta Zulfaninata, a student of ITS Interior Design Department who successfully bagged a silver medal in the Bharatika Creative Design Festival 2021 through the design of chairs suitable for the new-normal era.

With the theme of Physical Distancing Chair, Ferdy raised Hudoq dance as the Main concept of the chair design developed. The chair that successfully took Ferdy to silver in the Chair Design category was named Mo-Ma-Doq. It stands for Modular Mask Doq, where Doq itself stands for Hudoq dance. Hudoq dance is a dance that is closely related to the Dayak Bahau tribe as one of the Dayak tribes.

The elevation of the cultural theme on Ferdy chairs is a form of symbolization and pride as the son of the region. In addition, the concept of dance that is considered suitable with the new normal era makes the bespectacled young man execute Hudoq dance in a design. “I was born and raised in East Kalimantan, precisely Samarinda, so I raised Hudoq dance from Dayak Bahau,” he explained.

Further, related to the implementation of traditional dance concept into the form of chairs, Ferdy said that Hudoq dance is a dance performed using a face barrier or mask. The presence of a face barrier that is the main attribute of Hudoq dance inspired him about the pandemic situation, where people had to cover half his face.

However, not only philosophical aspects are the main concept, Ferdy said that Hudoq dance’s movements are also applied in design. The Hudoq’s twisted dance choreography is transformed by Ferdy to form a circular chair and turn back to each other. “I apply the chair so that there is no face-to-face,” said the 21-year-old student.

Ferdy also explained that the application of the seat design made in circles has the aim of minimizing the spread of Covid-19. Not quite there, as the name given to the chair, Ferdy created this chair in modular form. Modular design is a design concept that can divide products into multiple modules or combined. “So, I created a modular concept so that the first one is easy to mass-produce,” he added.

Other intentions of modular design in addition to avoiding people face to face is to make Mo-Ma-Doq chairs into a product that can be dismantled in pairs so that it is multifunctional and easy to move. The young man, born on March 16, 2000, also elaborated that the barriers on the chairs could be an intermediary for flower pots by utilizing the existing space.

Bharatika Creative Design Festival 2021 was held by the Faculty of Arts and Design of Petra Christian University (UK) Surabaya, 21-23 May 2021. The theme raised this year is aimed at responding to the pandemic situation in terms of design. Nowadays, seats in public spaces are mostly crossed as a barrier, so there is an event to initiate the design of special seats of the new normal era without softening the value of art and aesthetics.

At the end of the interview, Ferdy conveyed his message and hope to all ITS students who are still struggling. “For those who are still afraid and have not opened up, whatever opportunities there are tried only.
