ITS Campus, ITS News – To reduce the number of traffic accidents (lakalantas) in Indonesia, it is necessary to increase public awareness of road safety supported by technological innovation. By signing a memorandum of understanding or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PT Jasa Raharja, Tuesday (18/1), ITS is ready to contribute to efforts to improve traffic safety.
Data from the Indonesian Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) noted that traffic accidents cases throughout 2021 decreased by 1.45 percent from the previous year. However, the accident fatality rate continues to increase. As many as 61 percent of the total cases are caused by human negligence, so a movement is needed to raise driving awareness for road users in Indonesia.
The effort initiated by this accident insurance company received full support from ITS. ITS Chancellor Prof Dr. Ir Mochamad Ashari MEng expressed his readiness to contribute and assist PT Jasa Raharja’s programs to protect road users in Indonesia. “ITS is ready to support this traffic safety improvement program through the development of technological innovations and the resources we have,” said the ITS Chancellor, who is familiarly called Ashari.
Furthermore, the Director of Relations and Institutions of PT Jasa Raharja Munadi Herlambang said this collaboration has three main points. The first point is to facilitate communication and cooperation between State Universities (PTN) and PT Jasa Raharja to improve traffic safety in Indonesia. “ITS is the first PTN in eastern Indonesia to collaborate with PT Jasa Raharja in supporting efforts to improve traffic safety,” said Munadi.
The second point is to invite the younger generation, especially students, to be more concerned about the safety of themselves and others on the road. Munadi said that students could increase public awareness about driving safety more effectively and adaptively. “Students can contribute through creative campaigns with educational content about good driving procedures on the highway,” explained the alumnus of the ITS Chemical Engineering Department.
Munadi also said that PT Jasa Raharja was ready to support ITS students in academic terms, such as procuring scholarship programs, accommodating internship programs, and holding educational seminars for students. “We also invite students to have experience with traffic behavior, handling traffic accidents, to the process of providing compensation to accident victims,” explained Munadi.
The last is to establish more intensive cooperation if needed in the future. Munadi revealed that in addition to contributing in the form of social activities, students are also accommodated to innovate and develop technological innovations that can reduce the rate of traffic accidents. “Hopefully this synergy will continue to be maintained with PTN and the younger generation as the successors of the Indonesian nation,” he concluded.
