ITS Campus News – The Bayucaraka, a flying robot team, from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), represented by The Soeromiber team, managed to preserve their international achievements. The Vertical Take-Off Landing (VTOL) team won the first place at Federation of International Robot Sports Association (FIRA) Simul Cup 2022 for the Air Simulation category on the last 23rd August.

The head of Soeromiber team for FIRA Simul Cup 2022 competition, Muhammad Rayhan Athaillah, explained that the team supervised by Atar Fuady Babgei, S.T., M.Sc. won the first place at FIRA Simul Cup 2022 competition for the Air Simulation category. In this category, participants are challenged to create a program on virtual flying robot (drone) simulation, so they can pass a various obstacle.

After working for three weeks, Rayhan continued that the work was divided into several stages, namely drone control, computer vision, and movement optimization. First, controlling by using a joystick and keyboard (Teleop) is applied to determine the drone’s control. “Teleop control is used to obtain data such as movement in Cartesian coordinates and the axis of rotation as well as drone speed,” he concluded.

Furthermore, various algorithms are linked so the drone can follow the route line, land, and pass the obstacles. It is intended so that the drone can autonomously reach the finish line without touching the existing obstacles. “In this competition, drones are required to be able to pass obstacles in the form of gates horizontally or vertically without touching the sides,” he explained.

Besides, various trials were carried out by the team under Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa (UKM) Robotics ITS assistance to get the most optimal results. “Tuning and improvement algorithm are carried out continuously to get the best time and accuracy records from the previous results,” the ITS Electrical Engineering Department student said.

Rayhan admitted that one of the obstacles in this competition was the lack of information about time achievements of the other teams. For that reason, his team prepared five programs with different parameters as a strategy to surpass the other teams. “Each experiment is given five simulation opportunities. So that we made five programs with different levels of accuracy and speed,” he explained.

TThis student also hopes that this annual robot competition will be held offline, especially in the Air Simulation category. “Hopefully, FIRA Simul Cup competition in 2023 can be held offline, so you can feel the euphoria of a more challenging competition,” he concluded.

In addition to the Air Simulation Competition as the main event, ITS Soeromiber team also won the first place for the Air Simulation Technical Challenge. It is a side challenge from FIRA Simul Cup 2022 which also simultaneously announced online on 23rd August. (ITS PR)
