Campus ITS, ITS News – The number of professors or professors at the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has now reached 151 people, which was marked by the inauguration of three new professors from various scientific fields. This event was held offline at the Auditorium of the ITS Research Center Building and broadcast live via the official ITS Youtube channel Wednesday (12/10).

Before being officially confirmed, the three new professors delivered scientific orations based on the results of their respective studies. The first speech was delivered by Prof Dr. Drs Muhammad Mashuri MT with the title Controlling Variability to Improve Quality. The lecturer in the Department of Statistics explained that a quality product or service must be made with minimal variation from other products. “Because quality is inversely proportional to variability,” said the 149th ITS professor.

To control for variability, he continued, a control chart was developed based on variability measures or variance vectors and correlation matrices. This control chart is unit-free, so critical to Quality (CTQ) can be seen better based on just one control chart.

In addition, according to the Deputy Chancellor II of the Kalimantan Institute of Technology (ITK), the developed control chart is better than existing similar control charts because it can detect errors more accurately so that the risk of errors can be minimized. “Statistics for quality improvement efforts, if used properly, will increase the number of quality products and profits,” he continued.

Furthermore, Prof. Suntoyo ST MEng Ph.D. put forward his oration entitled Innovation Development of Formulas for Shear Stress and Sediment Transport Due to Hydrodynamics of Waves and Currents and Their Applications. There are around 530 exploitation and exploration platforms spread across Indonesian waters. The performance and processes of this platform are heavily influenced by wave and current activity, so the main hydrodynamic processes related to marine and coastal engineering are essential to note.

In general, waves will experience morphological changes as the waves move toward shallow waters. This lecturer from the Department of Marine Engineering developed a formula for shear stress due to the movement of various forms of ocean waves, a procedure for shear stress due to wave and current movements, and a recipe for sediment transport rates. “This new method can increase accuracy by up to 35 percent,” said the 150th ITS professor.

The last oration was delivered by the 151st ITS professor, Prof. Nurul Widiastuti SSi MSi Ph.D. from the Department of Chemistry, with the title The Role of Chemistry in the Development of Membrane Materials and Adsorbents in the Energy and Environment Sector. The lecturer, who is also entrusted with serving as ITK Deputy Chancellor I, developed a material called zeolite template carbon or KTZ and carbon zeolite composite (KZK) as an intermediate material.

KTZ can be used as an adsorbent for CO2 and H2 gases, which can be used further for various industrial needs. Aside from being an adsorbent, KTZ is also helpful as a filler for membrane materials to separate gases based on differences in gas diameter. “This is useful for improving the quality of methane gas in biogas,” he said.

On this occasion, ITS Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ir Mochamad Ashari MEng congratulated and thanked the three new professors for helping to increase the number of professors at ITS so that the institution’s quality also improved. “Institutional quality is also measured by comparing the number of professors and the total number of lecturers,” he explained.

Currently, ITS has 120 professors and 1,072 active lecturers, of which 149 are new young lecturers. This number looks less compared to other state universities (PTN). Still, the number of publications produced by ITS lecturers and professors reaches ten times and exceeds the number of publications from PTNs with more lecturers. “This means that our lecturers have high publication productivity,” he said proudly.
