ITS Campus, ITS News – The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) conducted a review on Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) readiness regarding its plan to open the Faculty of Medicine and Health. The courtesy visit for verification at ITS campus was represented by a group team led by The Director General of Health Personnel of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Drg Arianti Anaya MKM, Friday (17/2).

In his remarks, The Rector of ITS, Prof. Dr. Ir Mochamad Ashari MEng IPU AEng, said that the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine and Health ITS was motivated by a lack of doctors in Indonesia. Based on the World Health Organization (WHO) standards, ideally, a doctor serves a thousand people.

But in fact, The Rector of ITS who is familiarly called Ashari continued, the number of doctors in Indonesia still does not meet these criteria. Currently, Indonesia has only 170,000 doctors, so we need 100,000 more doctors to meet this criteria. “From the data obtained from the Directorate of Higher Education, Indonesia graduates around 4,500 new doctors every year,” added the Electrical Engineering professor of ITS.

As one of the best campuses in Indonesia, according to Ashari, ITS wants to contribute in meeting the needs of these doctors. Not only want to produce medical graduates, but ITS also intends to produce technologically literate doctors. “Because when the medicines has a collaboration with technology, it will be able to bring big changes,” he said optimistically.

In line with Drg Arianti Anaya MKM’s thought, according to her, the collaboration between technology and the field of medicine would be very outstanding. Ninety-five percent of medical devices in Indonesia are still imported. Of course, this is quite ironic considering there are many competent engineers and doctors in Indonesia.

After being elaborated through a presentation at ITS Rectorate Building, the team of the Ministry of Health was also invited to visit the building of Faculty of Medicine and Health ITS, which had been prepared. The Rector of ITS then directly accompanied that team to verify the infrastructure owned by the Faculty of Health and Medicine ITS.

According to her, ITS has a considerable opportunity to open and develop the Faculty of Medicine and Health. Arianti also advised that ITS could also contribute to produce in the need of medical devices in Indonesia.
