Surabaya, ITS NewsInstitut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) is recognized as one of the leading institutions in startup development in East Java. This achievement was realized in the form of an award given by the Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, in the context of the East Java Startup 2000 Movement.

This award is included in the category of Creative Industry Institutions and was received directly by ITS Deputy Chancellor IV for Research, Innovation, Cooperation and Alumni Bambang Pramujati ST MSc Eng PhD. The awarding occurred at Graha State University of Surabaya (Unesa) last Wednesday (20/9).

ITS Senior Manager of Incubator and Innovative Business Services (ILBI) Ir Baroto Tavip Indrojarwo MSi emphasized that as a technology campus, ITS has played an essential role in advancing startup innovation and creativity in East Java. “We have embraced various startups in the technological innovation sector that have survived to this day, especially among the ITS academic community,” he said.

According to Baroto, ITS has a unique concept in developing technology innovation-based startup segments. Even though the number of startups fostered is small, the main focus is on technology-based innovation. “The innovations produced by the ITS academic community which have a positive impact on society may be one of the assessment indicators,” he added.

This uniqueness is reflected in the structured division of startup clusters. The clusters built are the automotive, technology, creative industry and maritime groups. Apart from that, ITS will also develop a medical and pharmaceutical collection after opening the Faculty of Medicine and Health (FKK).

Baroto believes that another possible indicator is the number of startups that have been embraced by ITS and have succeeded in proving their existence. In 2020, ITS succeeded in giving birth to 56 new startups, nine of which managed to obtain significant funding and are still surviving today. “Currently, ITS has 52 sustainable startups, 22 of which receive funding from the Education Fund Management Institute (LPDP),” explained this lecturer at the Department of Visual Communication Design (DKV).

The impact of the startups that ITS has embraced is quite significant, including contributions to creating sustainable solutions in various sectors, especially technology. “Gesits motorbikes, electric coffee roasters, and the use of smart drones for regional and city planning mapping are the results of startup innovation that ITS has fostered,” he added.

This award is a reference for ITS to continue creating new startups based on technological innovation. According to him, students must play an important role and be actively involved in developing technology-based startups. “We will continue to encourage the ITS academic community to play an active role in realizing technological innovation through startups,” he concluded.
