ITS Campus, ITS News — The students of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) continue to make their almameter proud by continuously making brilliant achievements. This time, in the 2023 National Unmanned Fast Boat Contest (KKCTBN) competition organized by the National Achievement Center (Puspresnas), the ITS Barunastra and DNA Hydromodelling teams succeeded in winning first place in two competition categories at the University of Indonesia (UI) which has been running until Wednesday (26/10) evening.
In this national scale competition, the ITS Barunastra team won first place in the Autonomous Tourism Surface Vehicle (ATSV) Tourism Vessel Prototype Manufacturing and Performance Division category. Followed by the ITS DNA Hydromodeling team which successfully won first place in the Innovation and Technology Design (DIT) Tourism Ship category.
In the ATSV category, Barunastra was challenged to create an electric-powered unmanned vessel that could complete a journey to a certain point and return again. This category has five missions that must be completed by participating ships, including going along the river, along the sea, taking photos of mangroves above sea level, taking photos of fish below sea level, and mooring at the pier.
The Barunastra team responded to this challenge by launching a ship called Nala Athena which weighed 20.88 kilograms. One of the team mechanics from Barunastra, Sandi Christanto, explained that Nala Athena had been equipped with various technologies and features to outperform other competitors in this competition.
Sandi explained, to be able to carry out the missions mentioned previously, Nala Athena was equipped with a sophisticated sensor system consisting of lidar sensors and ultrasonic sensors. This system provides excellent vision above and below the water surface. “We use a lot of technology to detect objects and use GPS to find out the location of our ship,” explained this student from the Department of Shipping Systems Engineering.
Not only that, in order to support Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to maximize the use of clean energy, this ship is also equipped with several solar panels to produce its own electrical power. In addition, the ship is assembled from carbon fiber, which allows the ship to have a lighter weight, thereby reducing the amount of power used to move the ship.
Meanwhile, the ITS DNA Hydromodeling Team is no less innovative. In the DIT category, teams were challenged to design a ship using augmented reality (AR) and metaverse technology. The vessel designed must be based on the criteria and requirements of a case study.
Based on this, the DNA Hydromodeling Team, led by Akhdan Baihaqi in this competition, designed a ship called the MV Serena which was simulated to transport tourists from Australia to marine tourism in Raja Ampat, Papua with luxury facilities. “Because in this competition, the target is for upper middle class foreign tourists from Sydney, Australia to vacation in the Raja Ampat Islands to support the tourism sector in the area,” said Akhdan.
In accordance with its function and purpose, this ship’s design is equipped with various luxurious features such as a mini cinema, bar, swimming pool, and even a helipad among other features. At maximum capacity, this ship can carry 34 passengers and requires 34 crew to operate it.
After winning the competition, Sandi and Akhdan expressed their gratitude for having succeeded in getting first place in both categories. They hope to continue fighting and achieve further proud achievements. “We hope to be champions again in the 2024 IRC international competition in the United States next year,” said Sandi optimistically.
