ITS Campus, ITS News – The Barunastra roboboat team from the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has once again brought honor to their alma mater and the nation of Indonesia by clinching the championship title at the 2024 International Roboboat Competition (IRC). In this global-level competition held in Florida, United States, the Barunastra ITS team successfully outperformed renowned campuses from various parts of the world.
The IRC is an annual competition regularly organized by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) to showcase unmanned robotic boats. In the 2024 edition of IRC, 16 prestigious campuses worldwide competed, including Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, and Cornell University.
General Manager of Barunastra ITS 2024, I Made Vibra Dananjaya, revealed that the Barunastra ITS team secured the third place title in the Autonomy Challenge category. The first place was claimed by Istanbul Technical University, Turkey, followed by AGH University of Krakow, Poland, in second place. “In this category, the assessment is based on how proficient the boat is in autonomously navigating and completing the missions assigned,” Vibra explained.

At the competition, the Barunastra team had to go through several stages starting with the boat’s safety inspection. After successfully passing the inspection on the first day, the Barunastra team’s robotic boat, named Nala Proteus 2.0, had to sail in the qualifying round for three days to complete several missions. “Our boat managed to complete five missions,” he proudly exclaimed.
Furthermore, Vibra conveyed that Nala Proteus 2.0 also completed four missions flawlessly on the first day of qualifying, including the navigation channel, follow the path, duck wash, and speed challenge. On the third day of qualifying, the boat, which can travel at a speed of 5 knots, managed to complete one more mission, namely the delivery octagon.

The success of Nala Proteus 2.0 propelled the Barunastra ITS team into the final round, which took place over two days until Sunday (11/2) local time. On the first day of the final, the Nala Proteus 2.0 boat completed five missions, with two of them achieving perfect scores. “On the second day, we once again managed to complete four missions, with two of them scoring perfectly,” explained the student from the Department of Marine Engineering at ITS.
The successful completion of several missions by Nala Proteus 2.0 was attributed to the innovations implemented by the Barunastra ITS team. One of them is the crane system that successfully enabled the Nala Proteus 2.0 boat to complete the delivery and collection octagon missions. “The winch or crane that our team used can lift and move objects to accomplish the missions,” Vibra explained.

After successfully bringing home the third-place title from the United States, Vibra and his team admit they are not yet satisfied and are determined to continue innovating to develop the Nala Proteus 2.0 boat further. The Barunastra ITS team also intends to continue participating in international competitions to further develop its potential. “We hope that the Barunastra ITS team can continue to grow every year,” he expressed his hope.
