ITS Campus, ITS News — The Sapuangin team from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) is now preparing to face the Shell Eco Marathon (SEM) Asia Pacific and Middle East 2024, following another frugal car team, ITS Antasena Team. One of the preparations is to provide a new car to compete with, namely the latest version of Sapuangin XI Evo 3, officially launched at the ITS Research Center Building on Friday (21/6).

Representing the ITS Rector, the Director of Student Affairs of ITS, Dr Imam Abadi ST MT, in his speech, expressed his appreciation and will continue to support one of the proud energy-efficient car teams of ITS. Imam hopes that the Sapuangin ITS team can continue to defend the championship at the international event.Hopefully, the efforts that have been incised so far can produce brilliant results that can honor the alma mater’s name,” he said.

On the other hand, General Manager (GM) of the Sapuangin ITS Team Rayhan Naufal Hafizh explained that at this year’s SEM event, his team participated in two competition categories: Off Track and On Track. In the Off Track category, the Sapuangin ITS team has participated in several sub-competitions, such as Data Telemetry, Simulate to Innovate, Carbon Footprint, and Technical Innovation. “These categories refer more to the innovation that will be implemented for the car that will be brought in the field later,” he explained.

Naufal continued, for the On Track category, the energy-efficient car team will bring the Sapuangin XI Evo 3 car to compete at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) on July 2–6. Through the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Urban Concept sub-competition, this ITS student-made car will compete in terms of accuracy and speed to cross the circuit with a certain amount of fuel usage.

This ITS Mechanical Engineering Department student said several aspects of the Sapuangin car were also developed to win the category. The first development was changing the elemental material composition of several car parts from metal to carbon. “This is done so that the car’s weight can be lighter and the acceleration is faster,” said the 2020 batch student.

Moreover, an internal car system in the form of telemetry data was also developed. This is intended so the team can monitor urban cars’ speed and fuel usage when on the racing circuit. As for producing the drivetrain or the car’s propulsion system, the 11th-generation urban vehicle can move optimally. “These improvisations have resulted in an average speed of 38 kilometers per hour with a fuel consumption of 500 kilometers per liter,” explained Naufal.

Meanwhile, Sapuangin ITS Team Technical Supervisor Dr Ir Witantyo MEngSc hopes that the car with a size of 2.8 meters long, 1.3 meters wide, and 1.1 meters high will be able to appear dashingly in the competition, which will be held for five days. “Hopefully, the Sapuangin ITS team can again hold the championship title of SEM Asia Pacific and the Middle East this year,” he said.
