ITS Campus, ITS News — Supporting the determination of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) in implementing the Smart Eco Campus program, the Faculty of Science and Data Analytics (FSAD) ITS shows its commitment through the Plastic Surgery Movement. This movement is also supported by Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) through the provision of Reverse Vending Machines (RVM), Friday (20/9).
Dean of FSAD ITS Prof. Hamzah Fansuri SSi MSi PhD revealed that plastic is a major environmental problem that has not been resolved. This is because plastic bottles require a long degradation time, which is up to 450 years. “Even so, plastic is still inseparable from our lives so efforts are needed to overcome it,” added Hamzah.
Furthermore, the ITS Chemistry Department lecturer said that the Plastic Surgery Movement is a concrete step taken by FSAD ITS to help reduce plastic waste in the campus environment. “We want to create awareness among students and educators and education personnel (tendik) FSAD about plastic waste management,” he explained.
In line with FSAD’s commitment, BSI also supports this program by providing an RVM machine. This machine can help the process of selecting and compressing plastic bottles to then be reprocessed into new plastic bottles. With RVM, plastic bottle waste management becomes more practical.
BSI Branch Manager of ITS Branch Office (KCP) Retno Zaskia Jumalasari added that every bottle inserted into the machine will be converted into points that can be exchanged for rupiah. “The incentive is our appreciation to the ITS academic community for their contribution in protecting the environment,” said the woman who is usually called Zaskia. Closing her statement, Zaskia emphasized that with this facility, it is hoped that it can reduce plastic waste in the ITS environment. Not only that, it is hoped that in the future ITS will also take a role in supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 12, namely Sustainable Consumption and Production.
