Muhammad Afif explained the SISRI program created by the ITS Go Gangster Team as a solution to overcome traffic jams in big cities.

ITS Campus, ITS News — Congestion is one of the long-standing problems that often occur in big cities, including Surabaya. Based on this, a team of students from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) called the Go Gangster team designed a computer program integrated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) called the Surabaya Integrated Smart Road Infrastructure (SISRI) as a solution to overcome congestion in Surabaya.

The head of the ITS Go Gangster team, Muhammad Afif, explained that Smart Transport and Smart Governance are important pillars in the development of a smart city. Good transportation management will solve various problems, such as congestion, lack of interest in public transportation, and air pollution. “This congestion has even caused financial losses in the city of Surabaya of up to IDR 12 trillion,” said the student who is familiarly called Afif.

The team, which is also led by Dwiyasa Nakula and Michael Wayne, carries the innovation of using traffic lights that are adaptive to vehicle density through the SISRI program. This application has five superior features that can monitor community mobility patterns. One of its main features is SI-Eye, an AI-based camera sensor that can detect the type, speed, and flow of vehicles on the road.

The data collected by the sensor is then sent to SI-Traffic which adaptively adjusts the color of the traffic lights. This prevents the possibility of vehicle build-up caused by the long color changes of the street lights. “So far, the existing sensors and monitoring have been conventional, so the use of AI collects more complete and easy data,” explained Afif.

The innovation initiated by the 2022 batch of students also presents the SI-Robu service with the help of an on-board unit. This tool is an instrument installed on the vehicle body and can send a signal to the traffic light to turn green. This tool is mainly attached to priority vehicles such as buses, ambulances and fire engines.

In addition, there is also an additional SI-Air feature that can help monitor air quality in real time. This service is integrated with SI-Maps so that SISRI can provide recommendations for travel routes that have good air quality indicators. “In addition, SI-Maps can also show the position and route of public transportation,” explained this student from the Information Technology Department.

The program developed by the Go Gangster Team has also received a positive response from the Surabaya City Transportation Agency. The objectives and ideas presented are in line with the Smart City Surabaya masterplan which prioritizes improving public transportation. This service is also expected to be a reference in policy making related to Surabaya’s transportation system.

Not only in line with the Surabaya City masterplan, this innovation also supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in three objectives. First, this program supports the creation of an infrastructure, industry and innovation climate that is in line with the needs of the community. Second, this program helps build sustainable cities and communities that are free from traffic jams. Finally, SISRI achieves the goal of responsible consumption and production by reducing the use of fuel in motor vehicles.

Through the innovation it initiated, the team under the guidance of Ridho Rahman Hariadi SKom MSc has succeeded in winning first place in the Smart City category at the Gemastik XIV event at Semarang State University (Unnes), some time ago. This achievement spurred Afif and his team to continue innovating at SISRI. “Hopefully this program can be developed further so that it can be implemented in Surabaya City,” said Afif hopefully.
