ITS Campus, ITS News The Statistics Department student team of the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) managed to carve out a proud achievement at the 19th National Statistics Olympiad ANAVA, Saturday (2/15). The team consisting of Muhammad Akmal Abbad and Lailli Arifia Dewi managed to take home the second place position in the national-scale event.

Muhammad Akmal Abbad revealed that the victory of the team guided by Dr rer pol Dedy Dwi Prastyo SSi MSi in the 19th National Statistics Olympiad ANAVA was not easy. Along the way, he and Lailli faced several challenges that could have eliminated their team at any time. “The challenge was a valuable experience that had to be faced before finally succeeding in achieving second place,” said the young man who is familiarly called Akmal.

He explained that there were three rounds that had to be passed before winning the title. The first round was the preliminary round. In this round, they were faced directly with 20 short answer questions that had to be completed within three hours. The short answer questions forced the team to be careful in ensuring each calculation because there were no additional points from the progress of the work.

In this round, Akmal said that the strategy that his team adopted was to divide the focus of working on the questions according to the material that each person had mastered. Their experience and the many lessons that had been taken in lectures made it possible to divide the 10 materials that were predicted to appear in this round. “We divided the ten materials equally, that might make us more efficient and qualify for the next round,” said Akmal.

After ensuring their qualification to the semifinals, both were given one week to prepare themselves. Lailli also said that the one week was a hectic week because they had to set aside time to study while doing practical work.

Meanwhile, on the semifinal day, Lailli said that her team was faced with two stages of work. The first stage was working on 10 long questions with a duration of three hours. While in the next stage, they were asked to do a case analysis accompanied by making a report that also had a duration of three hours.

Lailli said that having two stages in the semifinals forced both of them to think hard. She said that working on long questions in the early stages made both of them very tired. This caused the second stage not to go according to the team’s expectations. “We were really pressed for time, but in the end we managed to collect the second stage on time,” said Lailli.

Lailli admitted that they were very confident which finally made her team successfully bring home second place to the ITS alma mater.
