ITS Campus, ITS News – Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology’s Masters Program in Management of Technology (MMT ITS) continues to improve the quality of its education. One of them is through ‘One Day Teaching Workshop’ program which focused on the topic of ‘Innovative Methods for Teaching Business Students’ at Swiss Bellin Hotel Manyar, Surabaya (8/24).

During the one-day workshop, the lecturers from Management of Technology Department who supervised the MMT ITS Study Program were provided with materials and training in innovative ways of teaching. The speaker for the workshop is Prof. Mark Goh from National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School whose work of journals and books are well-known globally.

The Head of ITS Department of Technology Management, Prof. Ir I Nyoman Pujawan, Ph.D; said that this workshop was intended for lecturers from the department he led so they can have more experiences on how to use innovative methods during the learning process.

He said that MMT ITS was indeed an engineer-based business school. Many of the lecturers had background in engineering fields. For this reason, he admitted that business education at public universities was quite different from the one taught in institutions where they focus more on the engineering programs. So, MMT ITS needs to know the development of learning methods in business schools that already have a good reputation in the world of international education.

“We (MMT ITS) need to learn from NUS as the world’s top class universities that already uses innovative ways in teaching (business education),” he said.

He also explained that, all this time, the traditional teaching model the lecturers used was by presenting the lesson material in front of the class. For majority of MMT ITS students, who have work and attend the lectures at night, this method was not really effective. MMT ITS needs to find a different methos so the learning process can become more effective.

“Through an innovative learning process, it will make students become more active and for night lectures to be more lively,” said the man who was also a lecturer in ITS Department of Industrial Engineering.

Meanwhile, Prof. Mark Goh during delivering the material mentioned that most teachers usually prepare the learning material a day before the lecture begins. However, for active and innovative learning process, at least two weeks are needed to prepare these materials.

“We (lecturers) must prepare an interesting material, multiply case studies, reduce the use of full material with words, and multiply pictures. Also, lecturers must think about strategies to anticipate if class conditions turned passive,” the professor said.

In active learning, based on a book by Edgar Dale entitled ‘Audio Visual Method in Teaching’, there was an important point that must be done which is a two-way discussion or a group discussion during the learning process. After that, conduct a case study and practice together what is being learned. This ranks first among the classification of what students can remember longer.”

Therefore, from this event, hopefully the lecturers will use more case studies to stimulate the students of MMT ITS to be more active. In addition, the teaching and learning process will be as lively during the night lectures.

The head department who is often called Nyoman also said that this kind of workshop, where there will be speakers present from international universities (such as NUS), would at least be done once a year to continue to improve the quality of ITS MMT education in the future.
