ITS Campus, ITS News – Becoming the first winner in a competition is not new, but leaving only one champion left for another participants in a competition is an interesting achievement, even for the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya. Which is the student of ITS Product Design Department (Despro), who successfully won five of the six trophies in the Jewelry Design Competition held by the East Java Office of Industry and Trade (Disperindag) on Thursday (10/25), at the Shangri-La Hotel Grand Ballroom Surabaya.
Jewelry has been a part of human life since prehistoric times, as a complement to the appearance and markers of its social status. This was used by the East Java Ministry of Industry and Trade to promote the culture and distinctiveness that existed in East Java through jewelry design competitions. The theme taken in 2018 is the typical flora and fauna of East Java. The competition itself is divided into two categories, casual jewelry and glamorous jewelry.
Ari Dwi Krisbianto ST MDs, and Hertina Susandari ST MT as the lecturers of Jewelry Design electives in the ITS Product Design Department have the initiative to register their student ’s mid-semester exam assignments to compete in the event. “Since the beginning of the assignment, the theme given has been deliberately adjusted to the theme of the Disperindag competition, so that after an internal assessment can be directly registered,” explained Febi Sesaria, one of the students who took this elective course.
Febi explained, from all participants who registered their work with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, five finalists were taken from the casual jewelry category and five finalists from the glamorous jewelry category. ITS itself donated eight finalists, five finalists in the casual jewelry category and three glamorous jewelry category finalists. “In other words, ITS has definitely wiped out the champions in the casual jewelry category, because the five finalists are from ITS campus,” she explained.
The final round itself consists of concept presentations and steps to make jewelry from the design of the participants. Took a long enough time, the finalists were invited to the opening of the 2018 Surabaya International Jewellery Fair (SIJF) at the Shangri-La Hotel Grand Ballroom, Surabaya on Thursday (25/10).
The opening of the SIJF was followed by the announcement of the winners of Disperindag Jewelry Design competition. “The designs of the winners were made into prototypes by the organizers, and exhibited at SIJF,” Febi recalled.
Uniquely, ITS only missed one trophy left from the six trophies contested. “We wiped out the first to third champions in the casual jewelry category, and the first and second winners in the glamor category,” she said proudly.
Febi is a participant who won the first place in the casual jewelry category. She revealed that the concept she brought was tuberose flowers. According to her, the tuberose flower is a typical East Javanese flora that has a certain value to be transformed into beautiful jewelry that is able to convince the jury. “I was inspired by the tuberose flowers. Because it’s the casual jewelry category, I make it simple and easy to produce but still beautiful”, she said.
As with Febi, Widya Pratiwi as the 1st winner in the glamorous jewelry category actually chose East Java’s unique fauna, bekisar chicken, as an inspiration for her work. Widya claimed to be inspired by chicken bekisar because as a typical East Java fauna, not many people know about it. Even the number of these species is very little due to habitat damage. Widya hopes that the beauty of golden green in the feather of Bekisar’s neck which she packs in jewelry designs is able to popularize the existence of these animals. (ram/qi)
