18 Top Stories in 2018: Achievements, Innovations and Contributions of ITS to the Country

ITS Campus, ITS News – Monday, December 31, 2018 is truly the last day of the year. Throughout 2018 to this moment, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has successfully demonstrated its achievements, innovation, and contributions to the country. As a year-end gift, the Editorial Team of ITS Online has summarized as many as 18 good news achievements, innovations, and ITS contributions that must be remembered by all ITS academics and the general public in an ITS 2018 Kaleidoscope.

1. Ichiro ITS RoboCup champion in Canada

Satisfactory results were achieved by Team Ichiro from the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS). After fighting against the mainstay teams from around the world, ITS Ichiro Team won the first place in Humanoid League Teensize Soccer Competition category at the RoboCup 2018 world-level soccer robot competition in Montreal, Canada. One week after the competition, this 80 cm tall Humanoid Robot succeeded in defeating WF Wolves, a team from Germany with a score of 1-0 in the preliminary round. Then continued in the semifinal match, Ichiro won with score 2 – 0. Unmitigated, in addition, to steal the champions in the category of Humanoid Teen size League, Ichiro ITS team also managed to become the runner-up in the category of Drop In Challenge Teen size, the second winner of Technical Challenge Teensize. and III Best Best Humanoid champion. In addition, this year Ichiro also won 19 awards at the Federation of International Robotsoccer Association-Humanoid Robot Cup (FIRA Hurocup) in Taiwan.

2. Sapuangin ITS Won Drivers’ World Championship in London


Have failed two years in a row, Sapuangin ITS Team finally won the first place in the prestigious international event Shell Eco-marathon Drivers’ World Championship (DWC) 2018 at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Circuit, London, England, Sunday (8/7). Being the first team to complete ten rounds with a 6.7 kilometer track, Sapuangin ITS team managed to defeat Sask Eco UC’s team from Canada and the INSA de Toulouse team from France who finished second and third. In addition, Sapuangin ITS Team has the right to bring home the trophy of the First Winner of DWC 2018.

3. ITS Barunastra Team Roboboat Champion in the US


The Barunastra team with autonomous vessels Nala Heroes won the first place in the 11th Annual International Roboboat Competition 2018 in Daytona Beach, Florida, United States (US). In this event, Barunastra ITS won the highest score with 4,996. The score beat the results of the other finalist teams from the world’s leading universities. These include the Georgia Institute of Technology (score 4,200), Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (818), the Delft University of Technology from the Netherlands (343), University of Michigan (318), and Florida Atlantic University (147). In addition, this team also defeated other teams from the Netherlands, Mexico, India, Canada, and of course one of Indonesia’s representatives, Diponegoro University.

4. Dancing Fountain Park, ITS Gift for Surabaya


The inauguration of Dancing Fountain Park was a sweet gift given by the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) on the 725th anniversary of Surabaya City. The construction of this towering fountain is claimed to be a special gift from the ITS Civil Engineering Alumni (ALSITS) who entered the age of 60 in November 2017. This 1,000 m² fountain garden is designed with 1,000 lumens LED RGB lighting and hologram technology, so it can visualize a variety of three-dimensional images that fascinating the eyes of visitors. In addition, the Mayor of Surabaya, Dr. (HC) Ir Tri Rismaharini MT expressed his gratitude to ITS for providing this consolation gift to residents of the city of Surabaya after the last terrorist bombing event.

5. ITS The Champion of Indonesian Robot Contest


Repeating its triumph in 2014, ITS students made a brilliant achievement again after being inaugurated as the General Champion at 2018 Indonesian Robot Contest (KRI) at the national level. In the prestigious contest, Tim River, who was the ITS representative in the Indonesian ABU Robot Contest (KRAI), won the first place after reaching the Rong Bay within 30 seconds. Meanwhile, the Iris Team who played on Indonesian Football Robot Contest (KRSBI) division, the Abinara-1 Team at Indonesian Fire Extinguisher Robot Contest (KRPAI) division, and the V-Rose Team at Indonesian Dance Art Robot Contest (KRSTI) division must be satisfied to ranked second. Unlike the previous year, the world champion Tim Ichiro from the KRSBI Humanoid division (legged) was forced to resign from the match because match regulations were not in accordance with those issued by the Ministry of Research, Technology and College (Kemenristekdikti).

6. Cooperating with the Ministry of Transportation, ITS Reduces Aircraft Accidents


Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) is doing cooperation with the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) and related parties to develop wind shear detection devices. This cooperation is a step to reduce the number of aircraft accidents caused by sudden changes in wind movements. This detector is still a prototype that has arrived at the field testing stage. Through the Wind Shear Detector, this work of our own nation is expected to facilitate airport to apply it in the field. This is because the finding tools are made much more economical. In addition, this tool is also a step towards the progress of the Indonesian aviation world.

7. ITS Ranked Second in the Most Productive Scientific Publications in Indonesia


A proud achievement was achieved by ITS. At the Science and Technology Index (Sinta) Award held by the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti). ITS won the second highest award in Indonesia as an institution with reputable international publication productivity in 2017-2018 in Scopus, the world’s largest journal indexer. In addition to winning the prestigious award, one of the ITS lecturers also won the award at the Sinta Award event. Namely as an author with the highest number of publications in 2016-2018 at the category of Legal Entity State Universities (PTN-BH) on behalf of Prof. Drs Ec Ir. Riyanarto Sarno MSc Ph.D. with the acquisition of Sinta scores 34.83 and successfully delivered him to become the third winner in Indonesia.

8. ITS Builds Drinking Water Treatment Installation in Balikpapan


The Department of Environmental Engineering of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) was trusted by the Directorate General (Dirjen) of Innovation Strenght from the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti) as implementation for the application of drinking water treatment technology innovations at the Hidayatullah Islamic Boarding School in Balikpapan. Based on this technology, lake water that was previously green was transformed into clear and safe water to drink immediately. In his inauguration, Director General of Innovation Strength Dr. Jumain Appe MSi, ITS Rector Prof. Ir Joni Hermana MScES Ph.D., and Deputy Chairperson of Indonesian House of Representatives Commission X Dr. Ir Hetifah Sjaifudian MPP who is also East Kalimantan community leaders had the opportunity to drink this processed water. All three argue that the treated water is odorless, clearer, and fresher than bottled drinking water.

9. Flag Football ITS Maintains National Champion For Four Years In Row


Achievement by achievement is not only inscribed in the field of science and technology. This was evidenced by the Flag Football of ITS Student Activity Unit (UKM) which successfully defended the title for the fourth time in the IFFA College Bowl VI competition late last November at the Pancasila Stadium, Gadjah Mada University (UGM). As revealed by one of the ITS Seaborg Players, Mohammad Kapita Umbasan, the ITS Seaborg Team always has the principle that hard work will not betray the results. The fundamental and effort that he and the successful team carried out brought ITS to the top 15 by defeated other teams that participate in the football flag among universities throughout Indonesia.

10. ITS Ranked by Times Higher Education (THE) 2019


For the first time, ITS managed to juxtapose its name with the ranks of world universities in the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Ranking (issued by the Times institute from England). In the process, there are 13 performance indicators carefully assessed to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparison, which is trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry, and the government. Unmitigated, the examination itself involved the professional service office of Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC), which is currently the largest inspection service office in the world. In addition, at the national level, ITS was in the fifth place after the University of Indonesia, Bandung Institute of Technology, Bogor Agricultural University, and Gadjah Mada University.

11. ITS Website The Second Best in Indonesia


Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) won second place in the 2017 Public Relations Public Relations and Kopertis Coordination category for the website category. The new ITS website is considered to have represented the institution and has the right target audience. In addition, in the publicity category, ITS was only ranked fourth. While for the social media category itself is still far from a good word. However, Dr. Dra Agnes Tuti Rumiati M Sc, Secretary of ITS and the branding team at ITS Protocol, Promotion and Public Relations Unit said they would form a team of administrators to evaluate this and give the best in the future.

12. ITS Lecturers Develop Augmented Reality to Learn Indonesian Topography


A lecturer from Department of Geomatics at the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Agung Budi Cahyono ST MSc, developed a Topography Augmented Reality (Top-AR) in Indonesia to help students learn topography in three-dimensional form. The system that uses color gradation as a difference in height, shape, the density of contour lines, and simulations of the movement of water on earth consist of four components, namely computers, sensors, projectors, and sand media. Together with the team, Top-AR was designed to work by scanning the movement of sand through the sensor, then transferring the scan to the computer. The result is a color and contour lines which will be visualized into the sand through the projector.

13. ITS Won General Champion in the 2018 Indonesia Bridge Contest Again


ITS officially holds the title of General Champion at the 14th Indonesian Bridge Competition (KJI) held at Hasanuddin University, Makassar. Winning three out of six categories contested in the KJI Baja class made the campus struggle to repeat its glory in 2015. In addition to the overall champion of KJI, ITS also won the 3rd place in the 10th Indonesian Building Competition (KBGI). KJI coach, Aniendhita Rizki Amalia ST MT expressed her pride at the KJI Team’s guidance. For him, the hard work of the team that consisting of students from the Department of Civil Engineering and Civil Infrastructure Engineering had produced the best results.

14. From ITS for Children with Blindness


Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) continues to provide the best assistance to students of the Special School (SLB) A YPTN in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This school only serves blind people with a total of 25 children. There was no sadness, the enthusiasm of the students was felt when the Rector of the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Prof. Ir Joni Hermana MScES Ph.D. made a visit while welcoming them. Ahmad Fatoni S Adm, Chair of the Foundation, said that ITS had helped many children in the foundation, one of them was through a braille printer machine. According to him, the impact given by the existence of this machine is very extraordinary. Children can continue to learn, work, and develop themselves.

15. ITS is The Champion of Ship Security Design in the United States


As a momentum ready to become the world’s maritime axis, the Basudewa Archimaiden Ship from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) won second place in the Worldwide Ferry Safety Design Competition held by the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association in United States (US). The team successfully won an award under the guidance of Ir Agoes Santoso MPhil from Department of Shipping Systems Engineering (Siscal) and Hasanuddin ST MT from the Department of Shipping Engineering. The design of this ferry has an advantage in terms of stability, ship construction using the twin-screw water jet technology as a driving force that uses economical hybrid fuel. In this competition that attended by 19 countries, including United States, Germany, France, Netherlands and other developed countries, this achievement is a pride for the ITS team, because it is able to outperform developed countries which are famous for the latest technology in the maritime field.

16. Again, ITS Launches Electric Cars and Biodiesel for the Dakar Rally


For the umpteenth time ITS had launched its work in the automotive field. In collaboration with PT PLN (Persero) and Budi Luhur University Jakarta, the Superior Center in Science and Technology in the Automotive Control System (PUI-SKO) completed three series of innovative cars, namely electric-powered cars, biodiesel-powered and hybrid cars. The car, named PLN BLITS, Hybrid Series Cassowary, and WVO Ford Ranger has different specifications. One hundred percent electrically powered with a motor with capacity of 50 kilowatts, PLN BLITS is predicted to be excellent in the 2019 Dakar Rally. Then, the Kasuari Hybrid Series is a hybrid series combined with diesel, so this car only requires 50 percent electricity and the rest is diesel. In addition, the name Kasuari was taken as a form of dedication to the eastern part of Indonesia. Whereas, WVO Ford Ranger is a car with cooking oil biodiesel fuel which was previously diesel fuel.

17. First in the World, ITS Scientists Investigate the Impact of SRM Geoengineering


One of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) scientists, Dr. Pol. Heri Kuswanto MSi, will be one of the first researchers in the world to conduct research on the impact of Solar Radiation Management (SRM) or solar geoengineering. He conducted the research with two young lecturers from the International Semen Indonesia University (UISI) who were also ITS alumni and one researcher from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). According to Heri, in particular the project will investigate how temperature and rainfall will change after the implementation of SRM in the future. The results of the study planned to be published at the end of 2020 will scientifically prove whether the SRM will have a positive or negative impact. This will later become the basis of whether SRM can be applied in the future or not.

18. ITS Shelter 1.0 Lighten the Load of Earthquake Victims


In order to ease the burden of the earthquake victims in Lombok and become a step to serve the community, ITS initiated the construction of Temporary Shelter (Huntara) 1.0. In contrast to government property, this shelter was built by the community itself with mutual cooperation. By calculating the land area and the number of souls in one family head, the design was built measuring 7.2 x 4.8 square meters. The project also utilizes old former buildings whose material can still be used. Like zinc, wood and brick. Meanwhile, the needs of cement, plywood and carpentry tools have been provided by ITS. Not only for earthquake victims in Lombok, ITS also participated in the Disaster Response Team to help the victims of tsunami and liquefaction of Palu, Sigi and Donggala and victims of the Banten and Lampung tsunamis.

These are the 18 series of achievements, innovations, and community service that have been carried out by ITS in 2018. Hopefully these achievements can continue to increase throughout 2019 in the future. This effort is none other than for ITS to continue to practice the Tri Dharma of College in the form of education, research and development, and community service.
