In The Middle Of Pandemic, ITS students Win Visual Storytelling Competition

ITS Campus, ITS News-Covid-19 Pandemic which requires almost all activities to be done online, does not discourage the spirit of the civitas academic of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS). This time, one of the students of the Department of Visual Communication Design (DKV) was successfully delivering her work to be the first champion of the best design category in Student at Home Challenge (SHC) 2020 in Visual Storytelling competition.

SHC 2020 is an online competition organized by IPB University and intended for diploma and undergraduate students from all over the university in Indonesia. This competition is implemented to increase student productivity in utilizing technology in self-isolating in the Covid-19 crisis.

Nabila Disarifianti, the student of Departement of Visual Communication Design who uses her skills in the design to follow one of the competitions in SHC 2020, namely Visual Storytelling. This race challenges the designers to be able to translate the story from the branch of the inspirational story contest with the theme against limitation into the shape of the image.

Lalak, her familiar greeting, claimed that her involvement in this competition is merely to fill his free time while learning from home. “Moreover, there are many online competitions that relate to design, I intend to try and to find achievements, “she said.

In the competition followed by Lalak, not all registries have the opportunity to become finalists. In the first stage selection, all registrants are required to collect a portfolio of original works made by the registrant without any other person’s intervention. “For this portfolio, I attach a document that I already have, most of them were from school assignments,” she explained.

From 281 applicants to the Visual Storytelling Competition, only 20 applicants were elected to the race finalists. Fortunately, the student from Surabaya was elected as one of the 20 finalists selected to follow the next stage. In this stage, Lalak is not the only chosen student. There are also Nadine Aulia Farah Diba, Aprilia El Shinta, and Shearvina Deas Gunawan on the list of competition finalists.

In the making of this work, Lalak was paired with Afif Husain Rasyidi from Brawijaya University who made the work of inspirational story with the degenerative title. This story tells of a dream that began to be eroded because of the low vision he suffered. A condition in which a person’s vision encounters a certain limitation in viewing objects, but eventually the author decides to learn to make peace with himself and wants to spread the benefits to others.

The girl who born on 1st March 2000 was admitted to the story of his owner telling about his personal experience. For him who is very tired of his visual orientation, it is very difficult to visualize people with low vision conditions. “But finally, I try to brainstorm from certain articles so that my work does not cause the wrong impression of offending the parties in the condition,” she said.

This 2018 student said the competition is the first time she participated in the competition because digital drawing competence like this just learned it in the fourth semester. Also, she had an obstacle in working on her work because it coincided with the week of collecting illustrations for assignments. “With the work that was only given for four days by the organizers, so I worked for this race a bit speeding,” she said.

This SMAN 5 Surabaya alumnus conveyed her interest in the festive design applied also in her work for this competition. She wanted her work to have a unique and cheerful impression. “For that, I always wear colorful colors in every illustration that I’m working on to impress eye-catching and memorable people,” she explained.

To translate an inspiring story that is full of meaning, the woman whose hobby is drawing since she was little said that she was putting attention to her illustration in terms of style and word selection. “Because from the story itself is very touching, emphasized the selection of words in the illustration that are not too complicated and easy to understand,” she said.

In closing, Lalak said that to work and foster continued productivity in the current situation, motivation must come from oneself. Think of that the prize is made a motivation to work. “As such, during this pandemic impressed with this negative impact, we can still do a positive thing.
