ITS Campus, ITS News – Making scientific papers is an obligation for students. To improve of the quality of the papers, the Faculty of Civil, Planning, and Geo Engineering (FTSPK) of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) held a webinar on writing scientific papers.

Prof. Suminar Pratapa, Ph.D., the speaker of the webinar, mentioned that there are some rules for the scientific paper publications in the digital era, especially for master students. According to him, students are free to choose between the three choices of paper publications as a requirement to graduate.

The first choice is for the paper to be published in an accredited national scientific journal, such as SINTA. Second, accepted in international journals that are not reputed, where any journal is permitted. Finally, a reputed international seminar, such as the one published by the AIP Conference Proceedings. “My advice is to choose an international seminar that raises the name of ITS,” he added.

Ib addition to that, Suminar also shared some other tips. One of them is how to use the right language for a scientific paper by utilizing the aid of translators. “Use the standard, good, and correct Indonesian, so that the translator will function properly,” reminded this ITS Physics Department lecturer.

On the other hand, Daniel Oranova Siahaan, S.Kom., M.Sc., PD. Eng., reminded that the process of developing manuscripts into an article, that is ready to be published, is not instant. “There are several stages that must be executed before the article is published,” he identified.

He further continued that after an author sends his manuscript, the manuscript will be filtered quickly by the editor. Manuscripts that pass will then be submitted by the editor to the responsible editor. During this step, the manuscript is assessed according to whether or not it is related to the field of the journal it adopted before it is finally submitted to the reviewer.

He elaborated that the reviewer will give comments, input, and recommendations for the manuscript. This comment will be considered by the responsible editor in deciding whether or not to publish the manuscript. “In essence, make a good article in order to pass the screening stage and prepare to be published,” he emphasized.

In the end, Dr. Ir. Murni Rachmawati, M.T., Dean of FTSPK, hope that this webinar will be of great use for students. So that the quality of writing can improve and students will present better TA and dissertation. “Hopefully, students can take advantage of this opportunity well,” she concluded, hopefully.
