ITS Campus, ITS News – The pandemic period did not hinder students of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) in implementing community service. This was proven by the participation of 1,225 ITS students in the Student Study Community Service program that was held in the Provinces of East Java (Jatim) and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) in September and November 2020.
The Head of the ITS Student Study Service sub-directorate, Lalu Muhamad Jaelani ST MSc PhD, explained that prior to this program, ITS had a different community service program which was carried out by a team of ITS lecturers. However, as time goes by, additional members of ITS students were needed to help in the implementation and dissemination stage of the program. “So the integration of Student Study Service into lecturers’ community service program was actualized to get more abundant service resources,” he stated.
In addition to help ease the duties of the lecturers, being a part of the Student Study Service was aimed to improve the quality of student service with the support of experience and funding from ITS lecturers’ community service program lecturers. “In essence, the collaboration between lecturers and students served as one of the ways ITS can help solve problems happening in the community,” he emphasized.
The Student Study Community Service consisted of 185 teams with 1 – 5 lecturers in each team, where the 1,225 ITS students were spread across several districts or cities in East Java and NTB Provinces. In its implementation, there were five main topics that is raised in this Student Study Community Service, which were adjusted to the existence of five study centres in ITS. Namely Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Regional Potential and Community Development; Public, Business and Industrial Policy; Center for Halal Studies; and Appropriate Technology. “Later, each topic will have a concept map for community service, built areas, and their respective partners,” identified this lecturer of the Geomatics Engineering Department.
One of the ITS Chemical Engineering Department students, Marisa Asrietd Hafied, who joined the Student Study Community Service activities at Al-Ahsan Islamic Boarding School (Ponpes), Jombang Regency, admitted that she was very happy because she could learn new things, such as learning about hydroponic plants and experiencing . “Apart from that, the Al-Ahsan Islamic Boarding School community welcomed us in a friendly manner and the activities went smoothly,” he revealed.
Not only that, the IBOE BUMI Team, as one of the partners who collaborated with ITS in the actualization of the Student Study Community Service in Kalipait Village, Banyuwangi Regency, was proud because experienced contributing directly to the community. Among them are by providing online financial literacy training, community service, and registering pre-employment cards for the residents there.
On this occasion, Lalu hoped that ITS students can take advantage of this Student Study Service as a social learning method in the society. “And during the program, students must maintain the good name of ITS because they are our ambassadors in the face of society,” concluded Lalu.
