ITS Campus, ITS News – COVID-19 Pandemic is no longer a barrier for Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Students to create new, innovative creations. Just like what three students of the Department of Electrical Engineering succeeded to develop the KEEP app, an app that is useful for monitoring the activity and the well-being of the elderly by utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT).

Those three students are Muhammad Naufal Prawironegoro, Muhammad Yusuf, and Audi Tomy Reriya Sakti. Those students together formed the Viktorits team that won first place in the DILo Hackathon Festival (DHF) competition of health category in mid-September.

KEEP is a monitoring system composed of wearable devices, robots, and multiplatform-based monitoring applications. This app is used to monitor the condition of the elderly and provide a warning if the elderly’s condition is in danger. “Like a heart attack, an unstable condition, or other dangerous health condition,” said Audi Tomy Reriya Sakti or often called Tomy.

This idea came from the many health problems encountered in the elderly since the increasing age of a person makes their physical condition also deteriorate. Plus, based on a survey conducted by the team, it shows that 43 percent of the elderly live with three generations and 9 percent of the elderly live independently.

Tomy revealed that the elderly often fell due to sudden coronary heart attacks or sudden strokes. Therefore the KEEP application is here so that it can be used by the closest family, community health centers, or private doctors if there is a danger or sudden illness. Then, the health expert can suggest the first treatment needed.

The way KEEP works are started by utilizing the wearable devices in the elderly which can make them communicate with the turtlebot robot locally through the gateway. Then to exchange information about the elderly conditions such as the deteriorating health conditions detected by accelerometer sensors and the heart rate conditions are read by ECG sensors (Electrocardiography).

Then from the gateway, logs of elderly conditions are uploaded to the FLOU cloud storage. The data on the Cloud can be accessed through the admin application and monitoring application. “Cloud also provides notification to the application if there are any health conditions that are determined to occur in seniors,” said Tomy.

The admin and monitoring devices can control and provide feedback to the turtlebot. The well-being of the elderly then continues to be updated from the Cloud to the doctor for advice and then it will later appear in the monitoring application.

In developing this app, there are several supporting tools needed such as hardware and software. Those supporting tools are the Telkomsel databox API platform, FLOU cloud storage server, Bot, Robot Operating System (ROS), If This Then That (IFTTT), and Wearable Device.

The advantage of this app is that it can be accessed in real-time and it also has more comprehensive supervision because there is an ECG module drop sensor that reads abnormal activity. “Furthermore, we provide an easy customer experience and an efficient customer journey, of course, we have also validated it,” concluded Tomy.
