ITS Campus, ITS News – Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) keeps on making a renewable innovation to support its academic activities. This time, ITS has successfully built 53 Smart Classrooms and designed a Smart Laboratory for Basic Physics and Basic Chemistry which has many advantages in the field of technology.

ITS Rector Prof. Dr. Ir Mochamad Ashari MEng said that there were 53 Smart Classrooms that ITS had built with a new and different appearance. This Smart Classroom is equipped with multimedia that are connected in parallel so that students can access it online and offline. “In the future, ITS face will change completely with this Smart Classroom,” continued Ashari.

Meanwhile, ITS Deputy Chancellor II for Planning, Finance, and Infrastructure Ir Mas Agus Mardyanto ME Ph.D. added, the advantages of this Smart Classroom are tables and chairs that can be easily arranged according to the wishes and needs of its users. Another advantage is that there is a camera that can detect lecturers’ movements during teaching and can record class activities.

The lecturer who is familiarly called MAM said that the purpose of establishing this Smart Classroom was to provide a sense of comfort for students and lecturers during learning activities. Besides, this Smart Classroom can also contain many participants, because class activities can be accessed online. “This can anticipate the need for online classes in the future,” he said.

This lecturer at the Department of Environmental Engineering explained that the process of building a Smart Classroom takes about four to six weeks. This depends on the design of the class based on the wishes of each department. “So, the completion time for a Smart Classroom is different in each department,” he said.

Apart from building 53 Smart Classrooms, ITS also succeeded in designing two Smart Laboratories. Head of the ITS Joint Lecture Coordination Sub-directorate (SPKB), Dr. Didik Khusnul Arif SSi MSi, explained that the Basic Physics and Basic Chemistry Laboratory is in the completion stage of becoming a Smart Laboratory.

Didik explained that the building and facilities at the Basic Chemistry Laboratory could be used. However, some of the equipment and practicum methods did not meet the Smart Laboratory criteria. It is different from the Basic Physics Laboratory, equipment and practicum modules in this laboratory can be run online.

Head of the ITS Biomedical Instrumentation and Signal Processing Laboratory, Dr. Rachmad Setiawan ST MT, explained that the equipment in the two Smart Laboratory combines mechanics and electronics. In the field of electronics, it uses microcontroller technology and for applications and websites, it uses the Transmission Controller Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP). “There is also a program for live broadcast using the camera,” he said.

Rachmad revealed that there are several advantages of this Smart Laboratory. First, the practitioner can do a practicum at any time and online after approval from the admin. Not only that, the parameters obtained will be more precise because the microcontroller produces an accurate speed. “This Smart Laboratory will also be able to serve the practical needs of non-ITS students,” he continued.

At the end of the interview session, Rachmad hopes that this Smart Laboratory can also be used by other universities and bring in income for ITS later, in addition to serving ITS internal needs. “In the future, the number of Smart Laboratory will be increased,” he concluded.
