ITS Campus, ITS News – The Covid-19 pandemic has made face-to-face teaching and learning activities stymied because of the occurence of Covid-19 suspected cluster that spread in schools in the yellow and green zones when the new normal policy is implemented. Concerned of these problems, the three students of the Instrumentation Engineering Department , Vocational Faculty, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) created a smart attendace tool to be applied in schools.
The three of them are Mohammad Jailani, Egik Ardiatmajaya, and Nanak Cito Tetuko who are members of a team called Insforty Team. According to Mohammad Jailani, as the leader of the Insforty Team, this innovation was based on the case of the Covid-19 spread in the education sector. “To prevent the spread of Covid-19 in schools, a safe and automatic health protocol is needed,” explained the student who is usually called Jailani.
Jailani continued, to prevent person to person physical contact when the health protocols checking is conducted in the education sector, he and his team designed a tool called Presentar (Smart Presensi). This tool will later be able to record the user’s attendance, detect body temperature, provide automatic hand sanitizers, and also be able to find out someone’s travel history.
Moreover, this 2018 class student explained, there are several innovations in his team’s Presentar. First, the system uses masked face recognition so that the attendance recording can still while using a mask and also without touching anything.
Jailani said that the currently available masked face recognition system can recognize masked faces. There are five process stages in how this system can recognize those masked faces, firstly, using the Multi-Task Cascaded Convolution Neural Network (MTCNN), then Facial Image Acquisition, Masked Face Detection Using MTCNN, Image Post-processing, Feature Extraction using FaceNet, and Face Verification Using SVM. “With these following stages, a person’s face will be recognized automatically and accurately,” said the 20-year-old young man.
Not only that, Jailani said, this tool is also equipped with a thermal detector that can find out a person’s body temperature. There is also an automatic hand sanitizer to keep users’ hands clean and hygienic. Also, it can track someone’s travel history since this tool is also equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking which will monitor through a system designed based on IoT ( Internet of Things ). “The hope is that before entering school, a person’s sterility is guaranteed through this automatic health protocol,” said the student from Probolinggo.
An alumnus of MA Model Zainul Hasan, Genggong, Probolinggo mentioned that this tool has several advantages. Among them is the ability to record attendance without contact and without removing the mask, the sophisticated system to measure body temperature, a convenient automatic hand sanitizer, and also a smart GPS tracking in the application. “Therefore the tool we made is very suitable to be applied to the education sector in the new normal era like now,” he said convincingly.
The two months of hard work from the team supervised by Brian Raafi’u SST MT bears the fruit of second place in the Borneo Scientific Fair 4 National Scientific Writing Competition held by UKM PP Lisma Tanjungpura University, last January. In this competition, Insforty Team managed to outperform 10 other finalists who were selected from 56 national papers.
Jailani hopes that in the future this smart attendance tool can be implemented and can run effectively in schools in the new normal era. “That way, this presence system might also be applicable in various sectors such as industry and offices,” he concluded hopefully. (bar/nadh/ITS Public Relations)
