ITS Campus, ITS News – Problems related to ethnicity, religion, race, and intergroup (SARA) are still intense in Indonesia because diversity can cause cases of intolerance if they are not appropriately addressed. Seeing this, students of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) created a three-dimensional (3D) poster design related to tolerance and togetherness in religious diversity.

Ramadhani Rijal Isnanda, an undergraduate student from the Department of Interior Design class 2017. Individually, the student who is often called Rijal carries the idea of religious tolerance in Indonesia in his poster.

Rijal explained that the idea he raised originated from unrest on social media. The amount of disinformation that is milling about in society has led to intolerance between social media users. “This causes netizens to have an inappropriate opinion and create chaos,” he said.

Starting from these problems, Rijal created six characters representing six different religions in Indonesia. The six people worked together to improve the word “tolerance,” which means that all social elements must uphold tolerance. “Tolerance must be formed from all religious communities, not only 1 or 2 groups,” he continued.

Various social media applications were used as the background for the poster. Rijal wanted to convey that tolerance is not only realized in the real world but must also be upheld in cyberspace. “What we can do as the millennial generation is to improve the flow of production and consumption on social media to spread tolerance and minimize discriminatory and intolerant actions,” he said.

All aspects of the poster are neatly packaged using blender software. They are beginning with modeling the desired character, followed by giving contours to the image. Lighting (lighting and shading) is the next step. The process ends by combining all aspects of the image with the rendering process and finalizing the image details with Photoshop.

Having experienced obstacles in the form of the equipment being used too heavy, the hard work of the Jember student paid off. The 3D poster design he created won 3rd place in The Indonesian Convey Competition 2021 in the Poster Design category. “I am quite happy because I can win the competition, although I never thought of winning,” he said happily.

Finally, Rijal hopes that his creations can positively impact others, especially the people of Indonesia. “I hope this poster can raise awareness about interfaith tolerance in the wider community,” he concluded. (far/ITS Public Relations)
