ITS Campus, ITS News – Following up on the green light from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemdikbud Ristek) RI regarding face-to-face lectures starting in July 2021, the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) is seriously working on a hybrid lecture policy. This is marked by the trial period’s start, which will be held in the upcoming 10th academic week.
ITS Deputy Chancellor I for Academic and Student Affairs Professor Dr. Ir Adi Soeprijanto MT explained that the trial process was an evaluation material before implementing the merger of offline and online lecture systems or hybrid. “The candidates for this trial period are all 2020 ITS students who live in Surabaya,” he said.
Furthermore, according to Adi, the consideration in choosing the 2020 batch of students allows them to get to know the ITS campus first. Because, since the first semester of college, they have never felt the atmosphere of lectures on campus. “In addition, it is hoped that it can minimize the risk of spreading Covid-19 and make it easier for students because they don’t have to look for a boarding house,” continued this professor of Electrical Engineering.
For this trial system, said Adi, all candidates will be given a schedule of face-to-face lectures on campus and online courses alternately. In addition, the campus will ask about the student’s health conditions related to their parents and guardians. “Based on the law, students do not need permission from their parents, but we will continue to approach their parents and guardians to inquire about their condition,” said Adi.
Later, if this trial period is considered adequate and takes place successfully according to health protocol standards (prokes), then in the odd semester of the 2021/2022 academic year, ITS will conduct hybrid lectures for all students from all departments. “There are no exceptions, later students from outside the city or the island are required to come to Surabaya,” he said.
Furthermore, ITS will release an official announcement regarding the trial period which will be carried out after Eid Al-Fitr. Only after the end of the 2020/2021 even semester will the lecture model policy be announced for the 2021/2022 odd semester. With this policy, Adi hopes that all parties can work well together. “Everyone must be able to adapt, lecturers must continue to improve teaching methods, and students must be serious in their lectures,” he said.
For information, according to Adi, as long as the pandemic has not passed, hybrid lectures must be conducted. Because, if all students carry out offline courses simultaneously, it will be challenging to fulfill the prokes to set a safe distance due to the limited number of rooms. “Meanwhile, based on the results of a survey conducted to all ITS students, almost half of the respondents stated that online lectures were deemed less effective,” he concluded.
